Abstract

Apparatuses and methods for configuring and managing solar panels to form strings of photovoltaic energy generators with improved performance and reduced cost. The photovoltaic energy generators are connected via one or more combined local management units (CLMUs), each having a plurality of direct current converters connected to and configured to receive direct current power from a respective solar panel. A controller unit shared by the CLMU'"'"'s direct current converters is utilized to separately control the operation of each converter such that the power extracted from the solar panels is maximized. A communications unit coupled with the controller unit is utilized to facilitate communications between the controller unit and a system unit remote from the CLMU to report measurements and receive control signals.

Claims

1. A local management unit, comprising:

a junction box;

a plurality of direct current converters configured in the junction box, each converter of the direct current converters configured to receive direct current power from a respective solar panel of a plurality of solar panels, wherein direct current outputs of the direct current converters are connected in series to provide power generated by the solar panels; and

a control circuit configured in the junction box and shared by the direct current converters, the control circuit configured to control separately operations of the direct current converters to extract maximum power from the solar panels.

2. The local management unit of claim 1, wherein the control circuit comprises:

a communications unit to receive control signals from a location remote from the control circuit; and

a controller coupled with the communications unit to control the direct current converters according to the control signals.

3. The local management unit of claim 2, wherein the control signals comprise duty cycles to operate the direct current converters respectively.

4. The local management unit of claim 3, further comprising:

sensors configured to measure operating states of the solar panels;

wherein the communications unit is configured to transmit measurements generated by the sensors to a remote management unit from which the control signals are received.

5. The local management unit of claim 1, wherein the junction box is configured to be secured to a first solar panel of the plurality of solar panels;

and second solar panels of the plurality of solar panels are connected to the local management unit via wires to provide input to respective direct current converters.

6. The local management unit of claim 5, wherein the first solar panel is located in a center position of a layout of the plurality of solar panels.

7. An apparatus, comprising:

a housing configured to be secured to one of a plurality of photovoltaic panels;

a plurality of direct current converters configured in the housing, each converter of the direct current converters having;

an input configured to be connected to a separate photovoltaic panel of the plurality of photovoltaic panels, and

a direct current output to provide electrical power generated by the separate photovoltaic panel, wherein outputs of the direct current converters are connected in series in the apparatus; and

a single communications unit configured in the housing and coupled between the direct current converters and a system management unit, the system management unit configured to control operations of the direct current converters via communicating with the communications unit.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, further comprising:

a plurality of controllers coupled with the plurality of direct current converters respectively to control duty cycles of the direct current converters.

9. A system comprising:

a plurality of solar panels; and

a combined local management unit (CLMU) connected between the plurality of solar panels and a first output that is configured to provide electrical power generated by the plurality of solar panels, wherein the CLMU comprises;

a housing configured on one of the plurality of solar panels; and

a plurality of converters configured in the housing and each connected to a respective solar panel of the plurality of solar panels to receive direct current input and to provide a second direct current output, wherein the second direct current outputs from the converters are connected in series to provide the first output.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the CLMU further comprises:

a communications unit configured to communicate with a remote management unit separate from the CLMU; and

a controller coupled with the communications unit to control operations of the converters in accordance with communications with the remote management unit.

11. The system of claim 10, where the housing is secured to a solar panel physically located at a middle position of the plurality of solar panels.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the CLMU further comprises:

a single current sensor configured to measure a direct current provided by the first output; and

a plurality of voltage sensors configured to measure voltages provided by the plurality of solar panels.

13. The system of claim 12, further comprising:

a remote management unit configured to communicate with the communications unit of the CLMU to control operations of the plurality of converters for the plurality of respective solar panels.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the remote management unit is configured to receive measurements indicating operating states of the solar panels, determine duty cycles of the converters and communicate data identifying the duty cycles to the communications unit;

and the controller is configured to operate the converters in accordance with the data identifying the duty cycles.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the communications unit is configured to communicate with the remote management unit via a wired connection for providing the first output.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein the communications unit is configured to communicate with the remote management unit through a wireless connection.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein the remote management unit is configured to instruct the controller, via the communications unit, to operate the converters in states to maximize power generated by the plurality of solar panels.

18. The system of claim 10, wherein the CLMU connects the plurality of solar panels to form a first string of solar panels;

and the system comprises a plurality of strings, including the first string; and

the system further comprises;

a parallel direct current bus configured to receive outputs from a plurality of strings in parallel.

19. The system of claim 18, further comprising:

a combiner box housing the parallel direct current bus, the combiner box having a receptacle configured to receive a removable modular unit having a plurality of first terminals and a second terminal; and

wherein when the first string is connected to the receptacle in the combiner box, the removable modular unit is configured to receive first power from the first string via the plurality of first terminals, and feed the first power to the parallel direct current bus through the second terminal.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the removable modular unit is further configured to perform at least one of:

measuring power input received at the respective first terminals;

selectively disconnecting the first string from the parallel direct current bus based on communications with the remote management unit; and

converting a voltage of the first string for outputting to the parallel direct current bus.
