Abstract

Glass articles with infrared reflectivity and methods for making the same are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, glass article having infrared reflectivity includes a first surface, a second surface and a body extending between the first and second surfaces. A plurality of discrete layers of metallic silver are formed in the body creating at least one optical cavity in the body. Each discrete layer may have a thickness T such that 100 nm≦T≦250 nm and may be spaced apart from adjacent layers of metallic silver by a spacing S≦500. The glass article reflects at least a portion of electromagnetic radiation incident on the glass article having a wavelength from 800 nm to 2500 nm and transmits at least a portion of electromagnetic radiation incident on the glass article having a wavelength from 390 nm to 750 nm.

Claims

1. A glass article, comprising:

a first surface;

a second surface;

a body extending from the first surface to the second surface; and

a plurality of discrete layers of metallic silver in the body.

2. The glass article of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of discrete layers of metallic silver has a thickness T such that 100 nm≦

T≦

250 nm.

3. The glass article of claim 1, wherein a layer of compressive stress extends into the body of the glass article.

4. The glass article of claim 3, wherein the layer of compressive stress has a depth of layer DOL of up to about 60 μ

m.

5. The glass article of claim 4, wherein the layer of compressive stress has magnitude of compression CS≧

200 MPa.

6. The glass article of claim 3, wherein the layer of compressive stress has magnitude of compression CS≧

200 MPa.

7. The glass article of claim 1, wherein a first layer of the plurality of discrete layers of metallic silver is spaced apart from the first surface by a distance D, and wherein D≦

5 μ

m.

8. The glass article of claim 2, wherein a layer of compressive stress extends into the body of the glass article.

9. The glass article of claim 8, wherein the layer of compressive stress has a depth of layer DOL of up to about 60 μ

m.

10. The glass article of claim 9, wherein the layer of compressive stress has magnitude of compression CS≧

200 MPa.

11. The glass article of claim 8, wherein the layer of compressive stress has magnitude of compression CS≧

200 MPa.

12. The glass article of claim 2, wherein a first layer of the plurality of discrete layers of metallic silver is spaced apart from the first surface by a distance D, and wherein D≦

13. The glass article of claim 12, wherein a layer of compressive stress extends into the body of the glass article.

14. The glass article of claim 13, wherein the layer of compressive stress has a depth of layer DOL of up to about 60 μ

20. A glass article, comprising:

a first surface;

a second surface;

a body extending from the first surface to the second surface; and

a layer of metallic silver inside the body.
