Abstract

Circular and curved surgical stapling instruments are disclosed comprising a circular and curved stapling configurations. A circular staple cartridge comprises a plurality of staples arranged in an inner row, an intermediate row, and an outer row. Staples in certain rows can vary in crown width to overlap gaps defined between staples in certain other rows which provide a stretch zone.

Claims

1. A surgical staple cartridge for use with a circular stapler, said surgical staple cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body;

a plurality of staple cavities defined in said cartridge body; and

a plurality of staples removably stored within said staple cavities, said plurality of staples comprising;

an inner row of staples comprising a quantity of first staples, wherein each said first staple comprises a first staple crown defining a first staple crown width;

an intermediate row of staples positioned radially outward with respect to said inner row of staples, wherein said intermediate row of staples comprises a quantity of second staples, and wherein each said second staple comprises a second staple crown defining a second staple crown width; and

an outer row of staples positioned radially outward with respect to said intermediate row of staples, wherein said outer row of staples comprises a quantity of third staples, wherein each said third staple comprises a third staple crown defining a third staple crown width, and wherein one of said first staple crown width, said second staple crown width, and said third staple crown width is different than another of said first staple crown width, said second staple crown width, and said third staple crown width.

2. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said inner row of staples defines a plurality of first gaps between said first staples, and wherein said second staples of said intermediate row of staples overlap said first gaps.

3. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 2, wherein said intermediate row of staples defines a plurality of second gaps between said second staples, wherein said second gaps are larger than said first gaps, and wherein said third staples of said outer row of staples overlap said second gaps.

4. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 3, wherein said third staples of said outer row of staples also overlap said first gaps.

5. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said inner row of staples defines a plurality of first gaps between said first staples, wherein said intermediate row of staples defines a plurality of second gaps between said second staples, wherein said second staples overlap said first gaps, and wherein said first gaps and said second gaps are at least substantially equal.

6. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said inner row of staples defines a plurality of first gaps between said first staples, wherein said intermediate row of staples defines a plurality of second gaps between said second staples, wherein each said first gap defines a first distance, and wherein each said second gap defines a second distance which is less than said first distance.

7. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said first staple crown width is less than said second staple crown width.

8. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said first staple crown width is at least substantially equal to said second staple crown width.

9. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein said third staple crown width is greater than said first staple crown width and said second staple crown width.

10. A surgical staple cartridge for use with a circular stapler, said surgical staple cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body;

a plurality of staple cavities defined in said cartridge body; and

a plurality of staples removably stored within said staple cavities, said plurality of staples comprising;

an inner row of staples comprising a first quantity of first staples, wherein each said first staple comprises a first staple crown defining a first staple crown width;

an intermediate row of staples positioned radially outward with respect to said inner row of staples, wherein said intermediate row of staples comprises a second quantity of second staples, and wherein each said second staple comprises a second staple crown defining a second staple crown width; and

an outer row of staples positioned radially outward with respect to said intermediate row of staples, wherein said outer row of staples comprises a third quantity of third staples, wherein each said third staple comprises a third staple crown defining a third staple crown width, wherein one of said first staple crown width, said second staple crown width, and said third staple crown width is different than another of said first staple crown width, said second staple crown width, and said third staple crown width, and wherein one of said first quantity, said second quantity, and said third quantity is different than another of said first quantity, said second quantity, and said third quantity.

11. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 10, wherein said second quantity is less than said first quantity.

12. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 10, wherein said second quantity is less than said third quantity.

13. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 10, wherein said plurality of staple cavities comprises a plurality of non-uniform cavity extenders.

14. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 10, wherein each said first staple of said inner row of staples comprises a pair of staple legs extending radially outward from each said first staple crown.

15. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 14, wherein each said second staple of said intermediate row of staples comprises a pair of staple legs extending radially inward from each said second staple crown.

16. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 15, wherein each said third staple of said outer row of staples comprises a pair of staple legs extending radially inward from each said third staple crown.

17. A surgical staple cartridge for use with a surgical stapler, said surgical staple cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body;

a plurality of staple cavities defined in said cartridge body; and

a plurality of staples removably stored within said staple cavities, said plurality of staples comprising;

an inner row of staples comprising a first quantity of first staples, wherein each said first staple comprises a first staple crown defining a first staple crown width;

an intermediate row of staples positioned outward with respect to said inner row of staples, wherein said intermediate row of staples comprises a second quantity of second staples, and wherein each said second staple comprises a second staple crown defining a second staple crown width; and

an outer row of staples positioned outward with respect to said intermediate row of staples, wherein said outer row of staples comprises a third quantity of third staples, wherein each said third staple comprises a third staple crown defining a third staple crown width, and wherein one of said first staple crown width, said second staple crown width, and said third staple crown width is different than another of said first staple crown width, said second staple crown width, and said third staple crown width.

18. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 17, wherein one of said first quantity, said second quantity, and said third quantity is different than another of said first quantity, said second quantity, and said third quantity.

19. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 17, wherein said first quantity and said second quantity are equal.

20. The surgical staple cartridge of claim 17, wherein said inner row of staples defines a plurality of first gaps between said first staples, wherein said intermediate row of staples defines a plurality of second gaps between said second staples, wherein each said first gap defines a first distance, and wherein each said second gap defines a second distance which is less than said first distance.
