Abstract

A staple cartridge assembly including staples is disclosed herein. The staples comprise features which improve the biocompatibility and/or bioabsorption of the staples. The staples are comprised of a magnesium alloy, for example. The magnesium alloy can also include zinc. In certain instances, a bioabsorbable polymer is coated on part of, but not all of, the staple. Portions of the staple that are not coated by the bioabsorbable polymer will be absorbed at a first rate while portions of the staple that are coated by the bioabsorbable polymer will be absorbed at a slower rate. In various instances, the tips of the magnesium staples are coated with magnesium nitride and/or any other suitable material which can increase the hardness of the staples. In certain instances, the staples are coated in silver. In some instances, the staples include one or more apertures defined therein.

Claims

1. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck; and

a plurality of staple cavities defined in said deck;

a plurality of staples stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said staple comprises;

a first portion comprised of an alloy including zinc and magnesium; and

a second portion comprised of an absorbable polymer, wherein said second portion is disposed on said first portion, and wherein said second portion covers less than the entirety of said first portion.

2. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said first portion comprises a base and a staple leg extending from said base, and wherein said second portion extends around said staple leg in a spiral pattern.

3. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said second portion is coated on said first portion in a dot-matrix pattern.

4. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said first portion comprises a base and a staple leg extending from said base, wherein a corner is defined between said base and said staple leg, and wherein said second portion covers said corner.

5. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said absorbable polymer comprises a non-crosslinked polymer.

6. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said second portion is coated on said first portion in a mesh pattern.

7. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said first portion comprises a base and a staple leg extending from said base, wherein said staple leg comprises a tissue penetrating tip, and wherein said staple further comprises magnesium nitride disposed on said tip.

8. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said staple further comprises a coating of ionized silver on at least part of said first portion that is not coated by said second portion.

9. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, further comprising at least one aperture in said first portion.

10. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck; and

a plurality of staple cavities defined in said deck; and

a plurality of staples stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said staple comprises;

a metal frame comprised of a magnesium alloy; and

an absorbable polymer coated on said metal frame, wherein said absorbable polymer does not cover every portion of said metal frame.

11. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck; and

a plurality of staple cavities defined in said deck; and

a plurality of staples stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said staple comprises;

a metal frame comprised of a magnesium alloy, wherein said metal frame comprises a base and a leg extending from said base, and wherein said leg comprises a tissue penetrating tip; and

a magnesium nitride coating on said tip.

12. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 11, wherein each said staple further comprises an absorbable polymer coated on said metal frame, and wherein said absorbable polymer does not cover every portion of said metal frame.

13. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 11, wherein each said staple further comprises a coating comprising silver on at least a portion of said metal frame.

15. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 13, wherein each said staple further comprises an absorbable polymer coated on said metal frame, and wherein said absorbable polymer does not cover every portion of said metal frame.

16. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 13, further comprising a magnesium nitride coating on said tip.

14. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck; and

a plurality of staple cavities defined in said deck; and

a plurality of staples stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said staple comprises;

a metal frame comprised of a magnesium alloy, wherein said metal frame comprises a base and a leg extending from said base, and wherein said leg comprises a tissue penetrating tip; and

a coating comprising silver on at least a portion of said metal frame.

17. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck; and

a plurality of staple cavities defined in said deck; and

a plurality of staples stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said staple comprises;

a metal frame comprised of a magnesium alloy, wherein said metal frame comprises a base and a leg extending from said base, and wherein said leg comprises tissue penetrating tip; and

an aperture defined in said metal frame.

18. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 17, wherein each said staple further comprises an absorbable polymer coated on said metal frame, and wherein said absorbable polymer does not cover every portion of said metal frame.

19. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 17, wherein each said staple further comprises an absorbable polymer coated on said metal frame, and wherein said absorbable polymer is not positioned in said aperture.

20. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 17, wherein each said staple further comprises an absorbable polymer coated on said metal frame, and wherein said absorbable polymer is positioned in said aperture.

21. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 17, wherein each said staple further comprises an absorbable polymer coated on said metal frame, and wherein said aperture is filled with said absorbable polymer.
