Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a sensor including an elongated member including at least a portion that is electrically conductive. The elongated member includes a sensing layer adapted to react with a material desired to be sensed. An insulating layer surrounds the elongated member. The insulating layer defines at least one access opening for allowing the material desired to be sensed to enter an interior region defined between the elongated member and the insulating layer. The insulating layer has an inner transverse cross-sectional profile that is different from an outer transverse cross-sectional profile of the elongated member. The difference in transverse cross-sectional profiles between the elongated member and the insulating layer provides channels at the interior region defined between the insulating layer and the elongated member. The channels extend generally along the length of the elongated member and are sized to allow the material desired to be sensed to move along the length of the sensor.

Claims

2. A sensor comprising:

a tubular body comprising a wall circumscribing a hollow interior extending along a length of the tubular body;

a member comprising a dielectric core having a non-circular transverse cross-sectional profile and extending longitudinally inside the hollow interior and defining a first channel between a first side of the dielectric core and the wall of the tubular body, and a second channel between a second side of the dielectric core and the wall of the tubular body; and

a first electrode and a second electrode, the first electrode comprising a working electrode formed by an electrically conductive layer disposed on the first side.

3. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the second electrode is disposed on the second side and is separate from the first electrode.

4. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the channels extend at least partially along a length of the elongated member.

5. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the tubular body defines an open tip leading to the hollow interior.

6. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the elongated body includes a third side defining a third channel between the third side of the dielectric core and the wall of the tubular body.

7. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the elongated body separates the hollow interior into a plurality of channels that are accessible through an open tip.

8. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the sensing chemistry is configured to sense glucose.

9. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the sensing chemistry is configured to sense lactate.

10. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the sensing chemistry comprises an enzyme.

11. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the sensing chemistry comprises a mediator.

12. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the dielectric core comprises a plastic material.

13. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the tubular body is constructed to facilitate capillary flow of a sample into the channels.

14. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the tubular body comprises an insulating layer at least partially enclosing the elongated member and the sensing chemistry.
