Abstract

A compressible adjunct is used with a surgical instrument. The compressible adjunct includes a hollow fibrous construct and a core fibrous construct housed within the hollow fibrous construct, wherein the hollow fibrous construct comprises at least one biocompatible material that has experienced at least one transition from a more ordered phase to a less ordered phase in response to heating the hollow fibrous construct to a predetermined temperature.

Claims

1. A compressible adjunct for use with a surgical instrument, wherein said compressible adjunct comprises:

a hollow fibrous construct; and

a core fibrous construct housed within said hollow fibrous construct, wherein said hollow fibrous construct comprises at least one biocompatible material that experienced at least one transition from a more ordered phase to a less ordered phase in response to heating said hollow fibrous construct to a predetermined temperature.

2. The compressible adjunct of claim 1, wherein said at least one transition constricts said hollow fibrous construct around said core fibrous construct.

3. The compressible adjunct of claim 1, wherein said at least one transition comprises an increase in entropy.

4. The compressible adjunct of claim 1, wherein said at least one biocompatible material is an elastomer.

5. The compressible adjunct of claim 1, wherein said core fibrous construct comprises said at least one biocompatible material.

6. The compressible adjunct of claim 1, wherein said hollow fibrous construct is transitioned from a first size to a second size smaller than said first size in response to said at least one transition.

7. The compressible adjunct of claim 1, further comprising an elongate slot, wherein said elongate slot extends along a length of said hollow fibrous construct, and wherein said elongate slot extends along a length of said core fibrous construct.

8. A compressible adjunct for use with a surgical instrument, said compressible adjunct comprising:

a hollow fibrous construct, comprising;

a first fibrous tubular member defining a space within; and

a second fibrous tubular member treated with at least one thermal treatment, wherein said hollow fibrous construct extends at least partially through said space.

9. The compressible adjunct of claim 8, wherein said first fibrous tubular member is shrunk around said second fibrous tubular member in response to said at least one thermal treatment.

10. The compressible adjunct of claim 8, wherein said first fibrous tubular member comprises at least one biocompatible material that experienced at least one transition from a more ordered phase to a less ordered phase in response to said at least one thermal treatment.

11. The compressible adjunct of claim 8, wherein said hollow fibrous construct comprises at least one biocompatible material that experienced a temporary phase transition in response to said at least one thermal treatment.

12. The compressible adjunct of claim 11, wherein said at least one biocompatible material is an elastomer.

13. The compressible adjunct of claim 11, wherein said at least one biocompatible material is absorbable.

14. The compressible adjunct of claim 8, wherein said hollow fibrous construct comprises:

a first biocompatible material that experienced a temporary phase change in response to said at least one thermal treatment; and

a second biocompatible material that remained in a solid phase during said at least one thermal treatment.

15. The compressible adjunct of claim 8, wherein said hollow fibrous construct is transitioned from a first size to a second size smaller than said first size in response to said at least one thermal treatment.

16. A method for preparing a compressible adjunct for use with a surgical instrument, the method comprising:

providing a first fibrous tubular member defining a space there within;

providing a second fibrous tubular member sized to fit into said space;

inserting said second fibrous tubular member into said space; and

effecting an at least one change in at least one of said first fibrous tubular member and said second fibrous tubular member through at least one thermal treatment.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein said effecting step comprises shrinking said first fibrous tubular member around said second fibrous tubular member.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein at least one of said first fibrous tubular member and said second fibrous tubular member comprises at least one biocompatible material, and wherein said effecting step comprises effecting a temporary phase change in said at least one biocompatible material.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein at least one of said first fibrous tubular member and said second fibrous tubular member comprises at least one biocompatible material, and wherein said effecting step comprises at least one transition in said at least one biocompatible material from a more ordered phase to a less ordered phase.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein said effecting step comprises at least one change in size in said at least one of said first fibrous tubular member around said second fibrous tubular member.
