Abstract

Glass pharmaceutical packages with coatings are disclosed herein. According to one embodiment, the glass pharmaceutical package includes a glass body enclosing an inner volume and having an exterior surface. A coating may be positioned on at least a portion of the exterior surface of the glass body. The coating may include a coupling agent layer having a first thickness of greater than or equal to 25 nm and less than or equal to 100 nm. A polymer layer having a second thickness of less than 50 nm may be positioned over the coupling agent layer.

Claims

1. A pharmaceutical package comprising:

a glass body enclosing an inner volume and having an exterior surface; and

a coating positioned on at least a portion of the exterior surface of the glass body, the coating comprising;

a coupling agent layer having a first thickness of greater than or equal to 25 nm and less than or equal to 100 nm; and

a polymer layer having a second thickness of less than 50 nm positioned over the coupling agent layer.

2. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the first thickness is greater than or equal to 40 nm and less than or equal to 100 nm.

3. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the first thickness is greater than or equal to 50 nm and less than or equal to 100 nm.

4. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the first thickness is greater than or equal to 60 nm and less than or equal to 100 nm.

5. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the first thickness is greater than or equal to 80 nm and less than or equal to 60 nm.

6. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the second thickness is greater than or equal to 25 nm and less than or equal to 50 nm.

7. The pharmaceutical package of claim 4, wherein the second thickness is greater than or equal to 35 nm and less than or equal to 50 nm.

8. The pharmaceutical package of claim 4, wherein the second thickness is greater than or equal to 15 nm and less than or equal to 35 nm.

9. The pharmaceutical package of claim 4, wherein the second thickness is less than or equal to about 35 nm.

10. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the first thickness is greater than or equal to 55 nm and the second thickness is less than or equal to 35 nm.

11. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the glass body comprises an aluminosilicate glass.

12. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the glass body comprises a borosilicate glass.

13. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein:

the glass body comprises a Type 1 Class glass composition according to ASTM Standard E438-92; and

the glass body has at least a class A2 base resistance or better according to ISO 695, at least a type HGB2 hydrolytic resistance or better according to ISO 719 and Type 1 chemical durability according to USP <

660>

.

14. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1 wherein:

the portion of the exterior surface of the pharmaceutical package with the coating has a coefficient of friction of less than or equal to 0.7 relative to a like-coated glass pharmaceutical package; and

a light transmission through the pharmaceutical package is greater than or equal to about 55% of a light transmission through an uncoated pharmaceutical package for each wavelength from about 400 nm to about 700 nm.

15. The pharmaceutical package as recited in claim 1, wherein a coefficient of friction of the portion of the exterior surface of the pharmaceutical package with the coating is greater than or equal to 0.6 after undergoing a depyrogenation cycle.

16. The pharmaceutical package of claim 15, wherein the depyrogenation cycle comprises heating the pharmaceutical package to a temperature of at least 250°

C. for at least 30 minutes.

17. The pharmaceutical package of claim 15, wherein the depyrogenation cycle comprises heating the pharmaceutical package to a temperature of at least 300°

C. for at least 30 minutes.

18. The pharmaceutical package of claim 15, wherein the depyrogenation cycle comprises heating the pharmaceutical package to a temperature of from about 250°

C. to about 400°

C. for a time period of at least 30 minutes.

19. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the polymer layer comprises a polyimide chemical composition.

20. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the coupling agent layer comprises an inorganic material.

21. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the coupling agent layer comprises at least one of titanates, zirconates, tin, titanium, or oxides thereof.

22. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein the coupling agent layer comprises an aminopropylsiloxane.

23. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein:

the portion of the exterior surface of the pharmaceutical package with the coating has a coefficient of friction of less than or equal to 0.6, wherein the coefficient of friction is a maximum coefficient of friction measured relative to a second pharmaceutical package in a vial-on-vial testing jig under a normal load of 30 N, the second pharmaceutical package formed from the same glass composition and comprising the coating on at least a portion of a second exterior outer surface of the second pharmaceutical package and subjected to the same environmental conditions prior to measurement; and

the portion of the exterior surface of the pharmaceutical package with the coating does not have more than 6 glass checks per 5 mm length when abraded along a length of about 20 mm with the second pharmaceutical package in the vial-on-vial testing jig under the normal load of 30 N.

24. The pharmaceutical package of claim 1, wherein a coefficient of friction of the portion of the pharmaceutical package with the coating is at least 20% less than a coefficient of friction of a surface of an uncoated pharmaceutical package formed from a same glass composition.

25. A coated glass pharmaceutical package comprising:

a glass body comprising a Type 1 Class glass composition and having an inner surface and an exterior surface and a wall extending therebetween;

the glass body comprises at least one of a class A2 base resistance or better according to ISO 695, a type HGB2 hydrolytic resistance or better according to ISO 719 and a Type 1 chemical durability according to USP <

660>

; and

a coating positioned on at least a portion of the exterior surface of the glass body, the coating comprising;

a coupling agent layer having a first thickness of greater than or equal to 25 nm and less than or equal to 100 nm; and

a polymer layer having a second thickness of less than or equal to 50 nm positioned over the coupling agent layer.

26. A pharmaceutical package comprising:

a glass body having a hollow interior and an exterior surface; and

a coating positioned on at least a portion of the exterior surface of the glass body, the coating comprising

a coupling agent layer having a first thickness; and

a polymer layer positioned over the coupling agent layer and having a second thickness;

wherein the coating has a total thickness of less than or equal to 150 nm, and the first thickness is at least 25 nm.

27. The pharmaceutical package of claim 26, wherein the first thickness is at least 40 nm.

28. The pharmaceutical package of claim 26, wherein the second thickness is less than or equal to 50 nm.

29. The pharmaceutical package of claim 26, wherein the portion of the exterior surface of the pharmaceutical package with the coating has a coefficient of friction of less than or equal to 0.7 relative to a like-coated glass pharmaceutical package.

30. The pharmaceutical package of claim 26, wherein the first thickness is at least twice the second thickness.
