1. A method for identifying data interactions performed within a computer network, the method comprising:

  • updating with one or more processors comprising computer hardware, a first metabase with first metadata about data objects stored on one or more primary storage devices in a native format;

    receiving selection criteria associated with moving data from the one or more primary storage devices to one or more secondary storage devices that store data in a backup format that is different than the native format;

    identifying with the first metabase, one or more of the data objects on the one or more primary storage devices which meet the selection criteria without accessing the data objects stored on the one or more primary storage devices;

    copying with one or more processors comprising computer hardware the one or more of the data objects in the native format identified by the first metabase to the one or more secondary storage devices in the backup format;

    replacing the one or more data objects stored on the primary storage devices with one or more pointers to indicate the locations of the one or more data objects copied to one or more the secondary storage devices;

    storing second metadata in a second metabase, the second metadata comprising information about the one or more data objects copied to the one or more secondary storage devices; and

    in response to a search query, searching the first and second metabases to identify one or more relevant data objects stored on the one or more primary storage devices and the one or more secondary storage devices.
