Abstract

A touch sensor that may detect an object away from the sensor is provided. The touch sensor includes one or more drive electrodes; one or more detection electrodes forming capacitance in cooperation with the respective drive electrodes; a detection circuit applying drive signals to the respective drive electrodes to detect the object based on detection signals obtained from the respective detection electrodes in response to the respective drive signals; and a controller controlling to change a range of electric flux lines generated between the drive electrodes and the detection electrodes.

Claims

1. A touch sensor comprising:

one or more electrodes having capacitance, the electrodes including a plurality of common electrodes, and the electrodes having a selectable electrode patterns;

a detection circuit configured to apply drive signals to at least one of the electrodes and to detect an object based on detection signals obtained from the electrodes in response to the drive signals; and

a controller configured to control operation modes of the touch sensor in accordance with a detection result by the detection circuit and to select the electrode patterns in accordance with the operation modes;

wherein the operation modes includes a long-distance detection mode and a position detection mode, the detection circuit detects the object being distant from the touch sensor on the long-distance detection mode, and the detection circuit detects a position coordinate of the object that contacts or approaches the touch sensor on the position detection mode.

2. The touch sensor according to claim 1, wherein the controller increases the number of the electrode patterns on the long-distance detection mode, and the controller decreases the number of the electrode patterns on the position detection mode.

3. The touch sensor according to claim 1, wherein, on the long-distance detection mode, the controller causes a pixel voltage of pixel electrodes to be higher than an off voltage of a gate of TFT, after applying the drive signal to the common electrodes.
