Abstract

A medical network service can replace or supplement some or all of an expensive internally staffed clinical facility network with a cloud-based networking service. The medical network service in certain embodiments can provide networking services via software as a service technologies, platform as a service technologies, and/or infrastructure as a service technologies. The medical network service can provide these services to large existing clinical facilities such as metropolitan hospitals as well as to smaller clinical facilities such as specialized surgical centers. The medical network service can replace and/or supplement existing IT networks in hospitals and other clinical facilities and can therefore reduce costs and increase security and reliability of those networks. In addition, the medical network service can provide synergistic benefits that can improve patient outcomes and patient care. In addition, a medical edge router can provide redundant communications features for transmitting patient data to the medical network service.

Claims

17. A system for escalating a patient monitoring alarm, the system comprising:

a hardware processor programmed to;

receive an alarm and physiological data from a device monitoring a patient;

determine whether a first clinician device associated with a first clinician is remote from the patient or local to the patient;

in response to a determination that the first clinician device is local to the patient,

determine whether the first clinician is available to answer the alarm,

in response to the first clinician being available, electronically transmit data packets comprising the physiological data to the first clinician device, and

in response to the first clinician not being available, escalate the alarm by providing the alarm to a second clinician device associated with a second clinician; and

in response to a determination that the first clinician is remote from the patient;

transmit, to the first clinician device, the alarm and data received from the patient monitoring device to obtain instructions from the first clinician,

receive an instruction from the first clinician device regarding the alarm subsequent to transmitting the alarm and data to the first clinician device, and

transmit the instruction and the alarm to the second clinician device.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the physiological data comprises trend data.

19. The system of claim 17, wherein the instruction comprises one or more of a diagnosis or a medication recommendation.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the hardware processor is further configured to transmit the physiological data to the second clinician device.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the physiological data comprises one or both of trend data and parameter data.

22. A system for escalating a patient monitoring alarm, the system comprising:

a memory comprising processor-executable instructions stored thereon, the processor-executable instructions pertaining to alarm escalation; and

a hardware processor configured to execute the processor-executable instructions pertaining to alarm escalation in response to receiving an alarm and data from a patient monitoring device based on at least a measured physiological parameter of a patient, wherein the hardware processor is configured to;

identify, based on data stored in the memory, a first care provider and a second care provider who are associated with the patient in the memory;

electronically determine that the first care provider is located remote from the patient and that the second care provider is local to the patient;

despite said determination that the first care provider is located remote from the patient, transmit, to the first care provider, the alarm and data received from the patient monitoring device;

electronically receive an instruction from the first care provider regarding the alarm, subsequent to said transmitting; and

escalate the alarm by transmitting the instruction and the alarm to the second care provider.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein the hardware processor is further configured to store an alarm setting associated with the patient in a cloud data store.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the hardware processor is further configured to, prior to receiving the alarm, adjust the alarm setting based on a received electronic indication that the patient is ambulatory.

25. The system of claim 22, wherein the instruction comprises a diagnosis and a medication recommendation.

26. A system for escalating a patient monitoring alarm, the system comprising:

a hardware processor configured to;

receive an alarm and physiological data from a device monitoring a patient;

identify, based on data stored in physical computer storage, a first care provider and a second care provider who are associated with the patient in the memory;

transmit, to a device of the first care provider, the alarm and data received from the patient monitoring device, to enable the first care provider to provide input as to care of the patient;

electronically receive an instruction from the device of the first care provider regarding the alarm, subsequent to said transmission; and

transmit the instruction and the alarm to a device of the second care provider to enable the second care provider to implement the instruction and thereby provide care for the patient.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the instruction comprises one or more of a diagnosis or a medication recommendation.

28. The system of claim 26, wherein the hardware processor is further configured to use telepresence technology to facilitate communication between the first care provider and the patient.

29. The system of claim 26, wherein the hardware processor is further configured to transmit the instruction and the alarm to the device of the second care provider using video technology.

30. Non-transitory physical computer storage comprising instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processor, are configured to perform operations for escalating a patient monitoring alarm, the operations comprising:

under control of a hardware processor,

receiving an alarm and data from a patient monitoring device based on at least a measured physiological parameter of a patient;

identifying, based on data stored in physical computer storage, a first care provider and a second care provider who are associated with the patient in the physical computer storage;

electronically determining that the first care provider is located at a nurse'"'"'s station and that the second care provider is in a room of the patient;

transmitting, to the first care provider, an indication of the alarm received from the patient monitoring device;

electronically receiving an instruction from the first care provider regarding the alarm, subsequent to said transmitting; and

transmitting the instruction and the alarm to the second care provider.

31. The non-transitory physical computer storage of claim 30, wherein receiving the instruction comprises one or more of receiving a diagnosis or medication recommendation.

32. The non-transitory physical computer storage of claim 30, wherein the operations further comprise using telepresence technology to facilitate communication between the first care provider and the patient.

33. The non-transitory physical computer storage of claim 30, wherein said transmitting the instruction and the alarm to the second care provider comprises using telepresence technology.

34. The method of claim 30, wherein the operations further comprise outputting a user interface prior to said receiving the alarm, the user interface configured to enable associating the first care provider with the patient in the physical computer storage.

35. The method of claim 30, wherein the operations further comprise, prior to receiving the alarm, adjusting an alarm setting for the patient based on an electronic indication that the patient is ambulatory.
