Abstract

An insert for receipt within a plate aperture having an inner wall along the plate aperture includes a body and collar. The body has inner and outer surfaces. The inner surface defines an insert aperture having a longitudinal axis. The collar extends from the outer surface in a first radial direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and extends along only a portion of the outer surface in a second radial direction transverse to the first radial direction and the longitudinal axis. The collar defines a first radial distance from the longitudinal axis at a first position of the collar and a second radial distance from the longitudinal axis at a second position of the collar that differs from the first radial distance. A fixation system includes the plate and insert which is receivable within the plate aperture such that the collar contacts and is slideable along the inner wall.

Claims

1. An insert for receipt within a plate aperture having an inner wall along at least a portion thereof, comprising:

a body having inner and outer surfaces, the inner surface defining an insert aperture having a longitudinal axis; and

at least one collar extending from a portion of the outer surface of the body in a first radial direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and extending along only a portion of the outer surface of the body in a second radial direction transverse to the first radial direction and the longitudinal axis,

wherein the collar defines a first radial distance from the longitudinal axis at a first position of the collar and a second radial distance from the longitudinal axis at a second position of the collar that differs from the first radial distance.

2. The insert of claim 1, wherein the collar includes a plurality of sections, and wherein the plurality of sections are spaced apart around the circumference of the body.

The insert of claim 2, wherein an outer edge of each of the sections define a respective first radial distance from the longitudinal axis at a first position of the respective outer edge and a respective second radial distance from the longitudinal axis at a second position of the respective outer edge that differs from the respective first radial distance.

The insert of claim 3, wherein each of the plurality of sections includes three collar segments, wherein an outer edge of a first collar segment has a first radius therealong, an outer edge of a second collar segment having a first end intersecting the outer edge of the first collar segment has a second radius therealong, and an outer edge of a third collar segment intersecting a second end of the outer edge of the second collar segment opposite the first end of the outer edge of the second collar segment has a third radius therealong, wherein the third radius is greater than the second radius which is greater than the first radius.

5. The insert of claim 1, wherein the collar defines a substantially non-circular shape with rounded corners.

The insert of claim 1, wherein the collar has a maximum length defined by a first linear distance in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis from the outer surface of the body to an edge of the collar and a maximum width defined by a second linear distance in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis, wherein the first linear distance is less than the second linear distance.

The insert of claim 1, wherein the collar has a maximum length defined by a first linear distance in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis from the outer surface of the body to an edge of the collar and a maximum width defined by a second linear distance in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis, wherein the first linear distance is greater than the second linear distance.

8. The insert of claim 1, wherein the collar has opposing upper and lower stopper surfaces configured for contacting corresponding upper and lower stopper surfaces of the plate.

9. The insert of claim 8, wherein the upper and lower stopper surfaces of the at least one collar intersect to define an edge configured for contacting the inner wall.

10. The insert of claim 8, wherein each of the upper and lower stopper surfaces of the at least one collar intersect an edge surface to define opposing upper and lower edges, the upper and lower edges configured for contacting the inner wall.

11. The insert of claim 10, wherein the edge surface is concave.

12. The insert of claim 1, wherein the insert aperture is threaded for receipt of a threaded fastener.

13. The insert of claim 12, wherein the inner surface includes at least one relief section, the at least one relief section defining a plurality of separated thread sections.

14. The insert of claim 1, wherein the body includes a slot extending through the inner and outer surfaces, and wherein the body is compressible between rest and compressed conditions such that the slot has a greater width in the rest condition than the slot has in the compressed condition.

15. The insert of claim 14, wherein the body includes a plurality of notches extending into a thickness thereof defined by the inner and outer surfaces, the plurality of notches being configured for receiving tines of an instrument, and wherein at least first and second notches of the plurality of notches are positioned on opposite sides of the slot and moveable relative to each other such that when the first and second notches are moved in a direction toward each other, the body compresses and the slot width becomes smaller.

16. A fixation system comprising:

A plate having at least one plate aperture having an inner wall along at least a portion thereof; and

the insert of claim 1, wherein the insert is receivable within the plate aperture of the plate such that the collar contacts and is slideable along the inner wall of the plate.

17. The fixation system of claim 16, wherein the inner wall defines a longitudinal axis, and wherein the insert is rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the inner wall and translatable along the longitudinal axis of the inner wall.

18. A fixation system comprising:

a plate having at least one plate aperture having an inner wall defining an inner wall longitudinal axis and at least one guidance surface extending from the inner wall, the inner wall defining a wall aperture defined by a first radius and the at least one guidance surface being defined by a second radius smaller than the first radius; and

an insert receivable in the inner wall of the plate and rotatable about rotational axes perpendicular to the inner wall longitudinal axis, wherein an outer surface of the insert is curved such that the insert is slideable along the at least one guidance surface during rotation of the insert about the rotational axes.

19. The fixation system of claim 18, wherein the insert defines a longitudinal axis and includes at least one collar extending from a portion of the outer surface of the insert in a first radial direction perpendicular to the insert longitudinal axis and extending along only a portion of the outer surface of the insert in a second radial direction transverse to the first radial direction and the insert longitudinal axis, wherein the collar defines a first radial distance from the insert longitudinal axis at a first position of the collar and a second radial distance from the insert longitudinal axis at a second position of the collar that differs from the first radial distance, and

wherein the at least one collar is slideable along the inner wall during rotation of the insert about the rotational axes.

20. A fixation system comprising:

a plate having at least one plate aperture having an inner wall defining an inner wall longitudinal axis and having upper and lower plate end surfaces extending from the inner wall; and

an insert receivable in the inner wall of the plate and rotatable about rotational axes perpendicular to the inner wall longitudinal axis, the insert defining a longitudinal axis and including at least one collar extending from a portion of the outer surface of the insert in a first radial direction perpendicular to the insert longitudinal axis and extending along only a portion of the outer surface of the insert in a second radial direction transverse to the first radial direction and the insert longitudinal axis, wherein the collar has opposing upper and lower stopper surfaces, and

wherein the upper plate end surface of the plate prevents rotation of the upper stopper surface of the collar and the lower plate end surface of the plate prevents rotation of the lower stopper surface of the collar.
