A biopsy device comprisinga hollow shaft, the shaft having a wall and a distal end portion, wherein a sidewardly facing notch is formed in the distal end portion,at least two optical fibers arranged for sensing within a volume between respective end surfaces of the optical fibers, wherein the fibers are arranged in the wall of the shaft so that the respective end surfaces of the fibers are arranged in a longitudinal direction of the shaft at opposite positions with respect to the notch, and wherein the respective end surfaces of the optical fibers are arranged outside the notch, anda cutting element being movably accommodated within the hollow shaft.
