Abstract

Surgical devices having a plurality of outwardly-biased flexible fins capable of inward movement such that the fins converge to provide both a passageway for surgical instruments to traverse towards a surgical site, and provide a substantially impermeable seal, thus providing for fluid retention during the surgical procedure. The outwardly-biased flexible fins provide for soft tissue compression, decreasing the length of the lumen or passageway through which instruments pass, allowing for a wider range of movement of instruments and better access to the surgical site, especially in patients with greater amounts of fat tissue that would otherwise require longer lumen lengths in prior art endoscopic cannulas.

Claims

1. A cannula for surgical procedures, the cannula comprising:

a body member having walls forming a lumen along at least a proximal portion of a length of said body member, said walls being bifurcated at two or more points along said length to form a plurality of distally extending flexible fins,

wherein said fins are naturally biased in an outward direction, and

wherein said walls are flexible such that, following insertion of a least a portion of the cannula into a patient during a surgical procedure, at least a portion of said walls are compressed inwardly to form a substantially impermeable seal of said lumen.

2. The cannula of claim 1, wherein one or more biasing devices are embedded within at least a portion of each of said fins.

3. The cannula of claim 2, wherein each of said one or more biasing devices comprise a shape memory alloy.

4. The cannula of claim 2, wherein said substantially impermeable seal permits the passage of one or more instruments used in said surgical procedure.

5. The cannula of claim 1, wherein proximal ends of said one or more biasing devices are secured to a base of said cannula, said base formed at a proximal portion of said cannula.

6. The cannula of claim 5, wherein said base has an aperture formed within, allowing objects to enter a proximal end of said cannula and enter said lumen.

7. The cannula of claim 3, wherein said substantially impermeable seal is formed distal to said two or more points.

8. The cannula of claim 3, wherein said substantially impermeable seal is formed proximal to said two or more points.

9. A surgical device deployment tool, the tool comprising:

a handle member having a proximal end and a distal end; and

a shaft integrally attached to said distal end of said handle member, said shaft extending distally and terminating at a shaft head, said shaft head having one or more receiving members formed thereon,

wherein said one or more receiving members are sized to receive correspondingly sized structures of a surgical instrument to be deployed in a surgical procedure.

The surgical device deployment tool of claim 9, wherein said surgical instrument comprises a cannula having body member with walls forming a lumen along at least a proximal portion of a length of said body member, said walls being bifurcated at two or more points along said length to form a plurality of distally extending flexible fins.

11. The surgical device deployment tool of claim 10 wherein, in a non-deployed state, said cannula is mounted in said shaft, the distal portions of said flexible fins being secured by said one or more receiving members.

12. The surgical device deployment tool of claim 11 wherein, to deploy said cannula, said cannula is moved proximally with respect to the said shaft head, thereby dislodging said distal portions of said flexible fins from said one or more receiving members.

13. A surgical device for providing soft tissue compression and fluid retention during surgical procedures, said surgical device comprising:

a base member having an aperture extending from a proximal end to a distal end; and

a plurality of flexible biasing devices attached to said base, said biasing devices having shafts distally extending from said base,

wherein said shafts are naturally biased in an outward direction,

wherein said biasing devices are flexible such that, following insertion of at least a portion of said device into a patient during a surgical procedure, at least a portion of said shafts are compressed inwardly to form a substantially impermeable seal.

14. The surgical device of claim 13, wherein each of said plurality of flexible biasing devices comprises a shape memory alloy.

15. The surgical device of claim 13, wherein proximal portions of each of said plurality of flexible biasing devices are movably secured to said base, allowing a working length of said biasing devices to be increased and decreased.

16. The surgical device of claim 15, wherein one or more slots formed on outer sides of said base are sized to receive and movably secure said plurality of biasing devices.

17. The surgical device of claim 15, wherein said proximal end of said base is outwardly tapered.

18. The surgical device of claim 13, substantially impermeable seal permits the passage of one or more instruments used in said surgical procedure.

19. The surgical device of claim 15, wherein a distance between said distal end of said base member and a convergence point between said shafts, may be varied by a user by increasing or decreasing the working length of said biasing devices.

20. The surgical device of claim 15, wherein a width of a gap between said shafts at a convergence point may be varied by a user by increasing or decreasing the working length of said biasing devices.
