Abstract

The wireless power transmission is a system for providing wireless charging and/or primary power to electronic/electrical devices via microwave energy. The microwave energy is focused to a location by a power transmitter having one or more adaptively-phased microwave array emitters. Rectennas within the device to be charged receive and rectify the microwave energy and use it for battery charging and/or for primary power.

Claims

1. A wireless power transmitter, comprising:

a plurality of antenna elements; and

at least one controller; and

the plurality of antenna elements and the at least one controller are configured to receive a multipath calibration signal from a device to be charged;

the at least one controller is further configured to adaptively adjust phases of a power transmission from the plurality of antenna elements, wherein the phases for the plurality of antenna elements are determined based on the received multipath calibration signal, wherein the determined phases for the plurality of antenna elements do not use a location signal indicating a location of the device to be charged, wherein the determined phases do not require a line of sight between the antenna elements and the device to be charged.

2. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1 wherein the phases for the plurality of antenna elements are determined by a complex conjugate of the multipath calibration signal received by the respective antenna element.

3. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1 wherein the determined phases for the plurality of antenna elements are optimal for delivering power to the device to be charged.

4. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1 wherein a frequency of the power transmission is greater than 100 MHz.

5. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1 wherein a frequency of the power transmission is at microwave frequencies.

6. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a plurality of antenna elements, a multipath calibration signal from a device to be charged;

adaptively adjusting phases of the power transmission from the plurality of antenna elements, wherein the phases for the plurality of antenna elements are determined based on the received multipath calibration signal, wherein the determined phases for the plurality of antenna elements do not use a location signal indicating a location of the device to be charged, wherein the determined phases do not require a line of sight between the antenna elements and the device to be charged.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the phases for the plurality of antenna elements are determined by a complex conjugate of the multipath calibration signal received by the respective antenna element.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the determined phases for the plurality of antenna elements are optimal for delivering power to the device to be charged.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein a frequency of the power transmission is greater than 100 MHz.

10. The method of claim 6 wherein a frequency of the power transmission is at microwave frequencies.

11. A wireless power transmitter, comprising:

a plurality of antenna elements; and

at least one controller; and

the plurality of antenna elements and the at least one controller are configured to receive a multipath calibration signal from a device to be charged by a power transmission;

the at least one controller is further configured to adaptively adjust phases of the power transmission from the plurality of antenna elements, wherein the phases for the plurality of antenna elements are determined by a complex conjugate of the received multipath calibration signal by the respective antenna element, wherein the determined phases do not require a line of sight between the antenna elements and the device to be charged.

12. The wireless power transmitter of claim 11 wherein a frequency of the power transmission is greater than 100 MHz.

13. The wireless power transmitter of claim 11 wherein a frequency of the power transmission is at microwave frequencies.

14. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a plurality of antenna elements, a multipath calibration signal from a device to be charged by a power transmission; and

adaptively adjusting phases of the power transmission from the plurality of antenna elements, wherein the phases for the plurality of antenna elements are determined by a complex conjugate of the received multipath calibration signal by the respective antenna element, wherein the determined phases do not require a line of sight between the antenna elements and the device to be charged.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein a frequency of the power transmission is greater than 100 MHz.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein a frequency of the power transmission is at microwave frequencies.

17. A wireless power transmitter, comprising:

a plurality of antenna elements; and

at least one controller; and

the plurality of antenna elements and the at least one controller are configured to perform shared charging of a plurality of devices;

the at least one controller is further configured to adaptively adjust phases of the power transmission from the plurality of antenna elements to charge the plurality of devices, wherein the plurality of devices share the plurality of antennas by time sharing, frequency sharing, phase sharing or antenna sharing, wherein for time sharing, the plurality of devices receive power from the plurality of antennas at different times, for frequency sharing, the plurality of devices receive power from the plurality of antennas using different frequencies, for phase sharing, the plurality of devices simultaneously receive power from the plurality of antennas using different antenna phases and for antenna sharing, the plurality of devices receive power from different ones of the plurality of antennas.

18. The wireless power transmitter of claim 17 wherein the plurality of devices are prioritized for power transmission by the at least one controller, wherein a higher priority device is charged faster than a lower priority device.

19. The wireless power transmitter of claim 18 wherein the prioritization is made based on a need of the respective device for power.

20. The wireless power transmitter of claim 18 wherein the prioritization is made based on a type of the device.

21. The wireless power transmitter of claim 18 wherein the devices to be charged are registered with the wireless power transmitter, wherein non-registered devices are not charged by the wireless power transmitter.

22. A method, comprising:

sharing, using power transmissions by antenna elements, charging of a plurality of devices; and

wherein the power transmissions have adaptively adjusted phases from the plurality of antenna elements, wherein the plurality of devices share the plurality of antennas by time sharing, frequency sharing, phase sharing or antenna sharing, wherein for time sharing, the plurality of devices receive power from the plurality of antennas at different times, for frequency sharing, the plurality of devices receive power from the plurality of antennas using different frequencies, for phase sharing, the plurality of devices simultaneously receive power from the plurality of antennas using different antenna phases and for antenna sharing, the plurality of devices receive power from different ones of the plurality of antennas.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein the plurality of devices are prioritized for power transmission by the at least one controller, wherein a higher priority device is charged faster than a lower priority device.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein the prioritization is made based on a need of the respective device for power.

25. The method of claim 23 wherein the prioritization is made based on a type of the device.

26. The method of claim 23 wherein the devices to be charged are registered with the wireless power transmitter, wherein non-registered devices are not charged by the wireless power transmitter.
