Abstract

A method for execution by dispersed storage network (DSN) monitoring unit that includes a processor includes receiving configuration parameters via an interface of the DSN monitoring unit. A configuration update request is generated for transmission to a plurality of managing units based on the configuration parameters. Collected storage unit data is received from each of the plurality of managing units. Aggregated storage statistics are generated based on the collected storage unit data received from each of the plurality of managing units.

Claims

1. A method for execution by a dispersed storage network (DSN) monitoring unit that includes a processor, the method comprises:

receiving configuration parameters via an interface of the DSN monitoring unit;

generating a configuration update request for transmission to a plurality of managing units based on the configuration parameters;

receiving collected storage unit data from each of the plurality of managing units that includes data collected from a proper subset of a plurality of storage units managed by the each of the plurality of managing units, wherein the proper subset is based on the configuration update request; and

generating aggregated storage statistics based on the collected storage unit data received from each of the plurality of managing units.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the configuration parameters indicate at least one configuration setting of at least one dispersed storage component for update by the at least one dispersed storage component, wherein the at least one dispersed storage component includes at least one of:

a storage unit, a computing device, a DSN managing unit, or a DSN integrity unit.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the configuration parameters include statistics collection parameters, and wherein the collected storage unit data received from each of the plurality of managing units corresponds to the statistics collection parameters.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the statistics collection parameters indicate at least one of:

a plurality of statistics to collect, a time frame for statistics collection, or a verbosity of logs to collect.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the data collected from the proper subset of the plurality of storage units includes at least one of statistics or logs corresponding to the proper subset of the plurality of storage units.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the collected storage unit data is received from each of the plurality of managing units as an aggregated report, wherein data provided in the aggregated report is based on the configuration update request.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

generating new configuration parameters, wherein the new configuration parameters are based on the aggregated storage statistics; and

generating a new configuration update request for transmission to at least one of the plurality of managing units based on the new configuration parameters.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing the collected storage unit data in a memory coupled to the DSN monitoring unit, and wherein generating the aggregated storage statistics is further based on a plurality of past collected storage unit data stored in the memory.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating projected storage data indicating when future storage will be needed based on the collected storage unit data.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating defect signatures data by searching for defect signatures in the collected storage unit data.

12. A processing system of a dispersed storage network (DSN) monitoring unit comprises:

at least one processor;

a memory that stores operational instructions, that when executed by the at least one processor cause the processing system to;

receive configuration parameters via an interface of the DSN monitoring unit;

generate a configuration update request for transmission to a plurality of managing units based on the configuration parameters;

receive collected storage unit data from each of the plurality of managing units that includes data collected from a proper subset of a plurality of storage units managed by the each of the plurality of managing units, wherein the proper subset is based on the configuration update request; and

generate aggregated storage statistics based on the collected storage unit data received from each of the plurality of managing units.

13. The processing system of claim 12, wherein the configuration parameters include statistics collection parameters, and wherein the collected storage unit data received from each of the plurality of managing units corresponds to the statistics collection parameters.

14. The processing system of claim 13, wherein the statistics collection parameters indicate at least one of:

a plurality of statistics to collect, a time frame for statistics collection, or a verbosity of logs to collect.

15. The processing system of claim 12, wherein the data collected from the proper subset of the plurality of storage units includes at least one of statistics or logs corresponding to the proper subset of the plurality of storage units.

17. The processing system of claim 12, further comprising:

generating new configuration parameters, wherein the new configuration parameters are based on the aggregated storage statistics; and

generating a new configuration update request for transmission to at least one of the plurality of managing units based on the new configuration parameters.

18. The processing system of claim 12, further comprising storing the collected storage unit data in a memory coupled to the DSN monitoring unit, and wherein generating the aggregated storage statistics is further based on a plurality of past collected storage unit data stored in the memory.

19. The processing system of claim 12, further comprising generating projected storage data indicating when future storage will be needed based on the collected storage unit data.

20. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprises:

at least one memory section that stores operational instructions that, when executed by a processing system of a dispersed storage network (DSN) that includes a processor and a memory, causes the processing system to;

receive configuration parameters;

generate a configuration update request for transmission to a plurality of managing units based on the configuration parameters;

receive collected storage unit data from each of the plurality of managing units that includes data collected from a proper subset of a plurality of storage units managed by the each of the plurality of managing units, wherein the proper subset is based on the configuration update request; and

generate aggregated storage statistics based on the collected storage unit data received from each of the plurality of managing units.
