Abstract

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a transmission medium for propagating electromagnetic waves. The transmission medium can have a first dielectric material for propagating electromagnetic waves guided by the first dielectric material, and a second dielectric material disposed on at least a portion of an outer surface of the first dielectric material for reducing an exposure of the electromagnetic waves to an environment that adversely affects propagation of the electromagnetic waves on the first dielectric material. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims

1. A transmission medium, comprising:

a non-circular dielectric core; and

a dielectric material disposed on at least a portion of an outer surface of the non-circular dielectric core, wherein the non-circular dielectric core and the dielectric material have different dielectric constants that enable electromagnetic waves to be guided by the non-circular dielectric core, wherein a first portion of the non-circular dielectric core is covered by the dielectric material to reduce exposure of the electromagnetic waves to an adverse environment, and wherein a second portion of the non-circular dielectric core is not covered by the dielectric material.

2. The transmission medium of claim 1, wherein the non-circular core has a first dielectric constant that exceeds a second dielectric constant of the dielectric material.

3. The transmission medium of claim 2, wherein the first dielectric constant exceeding the second dielectric constant causes the electromagnetic waves to be bound to the non-circular dielectric core.

4. The transmission medium of claim 1, wherein non-circular dielectric core has a cross section that is asymmetric.

5. The transmission medium of claim 1, wherein non-circular dielectric core has a cross section that is symmetric.

6. The transmission medium of claim 1, wherein the electromagnetic waves have a non-optical frequency range.

7. The transmission medium of claim 1, wherein the dielectric material comprises a dielectric foam.

8. The transmission medium of claim 1, wherein the dielectric material comprises an expanded polyethylene material.

9. The transmission medium of claim 1, wherein a first portion of fields emitted by the electromagnetic waves is confined to the non-circular dielectric core, and wherein a second portion of the fields is confined to the dielectric material.

10. The transmission medium of claim 1, further comprising a cover that surrounds an outer surface of the dielectric material for preventing exposure to the adverse environment.

11. The transmission medium of claim 10, wherein the cover comprises another dielectric material.

12. The transmission medium of claim 1, wherein the non-circular dielectric core comprises a first dielectric core that is adaptable for mating to a splicing device, and wherein the splicing device comprises a second dielectric core, and wherein the second dielectric core of the splicing device is at least partially aligned with the first dielectric core.

13. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a transmission medium, signals from a launcher; and

propagating, by the transmission medium, electromagnetic waves guided longitudinally along a dielectric core of the transmission medium, wherein the electromagnetic waves are generated according to the signals, wherein a first portion of an outer surface of the dielectric core is covered by a dielectric strip to reduce exposure of the electromagnetic waves to an adverse environment, wherein the dielectric strip is wrapped around the dielectric core, and wherein a portion of the outer surface of the dielectric core is not covered by the dielectric strip.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the dielectric strip comprises non-contiguous sections have varying diameters, varying longitudinal lengths, or a combination thereof.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the dielectric strip is wrapped around the dielectric core with varying pitches.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the electromagnetic waves have a non-optical frequency range.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the dielectric core and the dielectric strip have different dielectric constants that enable the electromagnetic waves to be guided by the dielectric core.

18. A cable, comprising:

a plurality of dielectric cores; and

a dielectric cladding surrounding at least a portion of the plurality of dielectric cores, wherein the plurality of dielectric cores and the dielectric cladding have different dielectric constants that enable electromagnetic waves having a non-optical frequency range to be bound to the plurality of dielectric cores, wherein the dielectric cladding comprises a plurality of non-contiguous sections longitudinally spread along an axis of each of the plurality of dielectric cores.

19. The cable of claim 18, wherein at least one of the plurality of dielectric cores has a non-circular cross section.

20. The cable of claim 18, wherein the dielectric cladding reduces exposure of the electromagnetic waves to an environment that adversely affects propagation of the electromagnetic waves on the plurality of dielectric cores.
