Abstract

A staple cartridge is disclosed. The staple cartridge can include a cartridge body having a plurality of staple cavities defined therein. The staple cavities can be obliquely oriented relative to a longitudinal axis of the staple cartridge. The staple cavities can be arranged in a plurality of rows including an inner row, an intermediate row, and an outer row. The lateral and/or longitudinal spacing and/or overlap between the staples in adjacent rows can vary to optimize the flexibility and/or sealing properties of the staple line. The size and orientation of the staples can also vary row-to-row and/or longitudinally.

Claims

1. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body comprising a longitudinal slot, wherein a plurality of staple cavities are defined in said cartridge body, and wherein said staple cavities are obliquely oriented relative to said longitudinal slot; and

a plurality of staples positioned in said staple cavities;

wherein said staple cavities in said cartridge body are arranged in a plurality of rows, and wherein said plurality of rows comprises;

a first row positioned on a first side of said longitudinal slot;

a second row positioned on the first side of said longitudinal slot, wherein said staples positioned in said staple cavities in said first row are longitudinally spaced from said staples positioned in said staple cavities in said second row by a first distance; and

a third row positioned on the first side of said longitudinal slot, wherein said staples positioned in said staple cavities in said third row are longitudinally spaced from said staples positioned in said staple cavities in said second row by a second distance, and wherein said second distance is different than said first distance.

2. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said second row is positioned intermediate said first row and said third row.

3. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said staples in said staple cavities in said first row longitudinally overlap said staples in said staple cavities in said second row by said first distance, and wherein said staples in said staple cavities in said third row longitudinally overlap said staples in said staple cavities in said second row by said second distance.

4. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said second distance is zero.

5. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said plurality of staples comprises:

a first staple positioned in one of said staple cavities in said first row, wherein said first staple comprises a first base comprising a first length; and

a third staple positioned in one of said staple cavities in said third row, wherein said third staple comprises a third base comprising a third length, and wherein said third length is different than said first length.

6. The staple cartridge of claim 5, wherein said plurality of staples further comprises a second staple positioned in one of said staple cavities in said second row, wherein said second staple comprises a second base comprising a second length, and wherein said second length is different than said first length and said third length.

7. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said staple cavities in said first row are oriented at a first angle relative to said longitudinal slot, wherein said staple cavities in said second row are oriented at a second angle relative to said longitudinal slot, and wherein said staple cavities in said third row are oriented at a third angle relative to said longitudinal slot.

8. The staple cartridge of claim 7, wherein said second angle is different than said first angle and said third angle.

9. The staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein said second angle is 180 degrees offset from said first angle.

10. The staple cartridge of claim 9, wherein said third angle is different than said first angle.

11. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body comprising a longitudinal slot, wherein a plurality of staple cavities are defined in said cartridge body, wherein said staple cavities are obliquely oriented relative to said longitudinal axis, wherein each said staple cavity comprises a proximal end and a distal end, wherein said plurality of staple cavities are arranged in a plurality of rows, and wherein said plurality of rows comprises;

a first row positioned on a first side of said longitudinal slot;

a second row positioned on the first side of said longitudinal slot, wherein said proximal and distal ends of said staple cavities in said second row are longitudinally offset relative to said proximal and distal ends of said staple cavities in said first row; and

a third row positioned on the first side of said longitudinal slot, wherein said proximal and distal ends of said staple cavities in said third row are longitudinally offset relative to said proximal and distal ends of said staple cavities in said first row and said second row.

12. The staple cartridge of claim 11, wherein said staple cavities in said third row at least partially longitudinally overlap said staple cavities in said first row.

13. The staple cartridge of claim 12, wherein said staple cavities in said second row at least partially longitudinally overlap said staple cavities in said third row.

14. The staple cartridge of claim 13, wherein said staple cavities in said second row at least partially longitudinally overlap said staple cavities in said first row.

15. The staple cartridge of claim 11, further comprising a plurality of staples positioned in said staple cavities, wherein said plurality of staples comprises:

a first staple positioned in one of said staple cavities in said first row, wherein said first staple comprises a first base comprising a first length; and

a third staple positioned in one of said staple cavities in said third row, wherein said third staple comprises a third base comprising a third length, and wherein said third length is greater than said first length.

16. The staple cartridge of claim 15, wherein said plurality of staples further comprises a second staple positioned in one of said staple cavities in said second row, wherein said second staple comprises a second base comprising a second length, and wherein said second length is different than said first length and said third length.

17. The staple cartridge of claim 11, wherein said staple cavities in said first row are oriented at a first angle relative to said longitudinal slot, wherein said staple cavities in said second row are oriented at a second angle relative to said longitudinal slot, and wherein said staple cavities in said third row are oriented at a third angle relative to said longitudinal slot.

18. The staple cartridge of claim 17, wherein said second angle is different than said first angle and said third angle.

19. The staple cartridge of claim 18, wherein said third angle is different than said first angle.

20. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body comprising a longitudinal slot, wherein a plurality of staple cavities are defined in said cartridge body, wherein said staple cavities are angularly oriented relative to said longitudinal slot, wherein said staple cavities are arranged in a plurality of rows, and wherein said plurality of rows comprises;

a first row positioned on a first side of said longitudinal slot;

a second row positioned on the first side of said longitudinal slot, wherein said staples in said first row longitudinally overlap said staples in said second row by a first distance; and

a third row positioned on the first side of said longitudinal slot, wherein said staples in said third row longitudinally overlap said staples in said second row by a second distance, and wherein said second distance is different than said first distance; and

a plurality of staples positioned in said staple cavities.
