Abstract

An example apparatus disclosed herein includes a controller; one or more receiving circuits coupled to the controller, each receiving circuit configured to receive incoming RF signals from a receiver, the receiver transmitting a communication signal that identifies a location of the receiver; a plurality of transmitting circuits coupled to the controller, each transmitting circuit configured to generate outgoing RF signals based upon the incoming RF signals; and a plurality of antenna elements, the plurality of antenna elements including at least some dedicated antenna elements. In some embodiments, the controller is configured to: (i) select a first configuration of at least some of the dedicated antenna elements to be coupled to the receiving circuits, and (ii) select, based on the location, a second configuration of at least some of the plurality of antenna elements to be coupled to the plurality of transmitting circuits to transmit the outgoing RF signals.

2. A wireless power transmitter comprising:

a receiving integrated circuit configured to process an incoming radio frequency (RF) signal indicating a location of a receiver;

a transmitting integrated circuit configured to generate outgoing RF power signals based on the processed incoming RF signal;

an antenna array comprising (i) a first group of antenna elements coupled and dedicated to the receiving integrated circuit, and (ii) a second group of antenna elements switchably coupled to the transmitting integrated circuit; and

a controller coupled to the receiving and transmitting integrated circuits, the controller being configured to;

cause one or more antenna elements of the second group of antenna elements to be coupled to the transmitting integrated circuit based on the location of the receiver, and

cause the one or more antenna elements of the second group of antenna elements to transmit outgoing RF power signals to the location of the receiver, wherein the receiver uses energy from the received outgoing RF power signals to power and/or charge an electronic device.

3. The wireless power transmitter of claim 2, wherein the first group of antenna elements comprises a row or column of antenna elements in the antenna array.

4. The wireless power transmitter of claim 3, wherein the second group of antenna elements comprises:

one or more rows of antenna elements in the antenna array;

one or more columns of antenna elements in the antenna array;

or

one or more rows and one or more columns of antenna elements in the antenna array.

5. The wireless power transmitter of claim 4, wherein the first group of antenna elements differs from the second group of antenna elements.

6. The wireless power transmitter of claim 5, wherein:

the first group of antenna elements includes at least two antenna elements; and

the second group of antenna elements includes at least two antenna elements.

7. The wireless power transmitter of claim 2, wherein:

the receiving integrated circuit includes a down converter; and

the down converter is configured to down convert the incoming RF signal.

8. The wireless power transmitter of claim 2, wherein:

the receiving integrated circuit has first components;

the transmitting integrated circuit has second components; and

the first components differ from the second components.

9. The wireless power transmitter of claim 2, wherein the controller is configured to control operation of the transmitting integrated circuit so as to concentrate transmission of the outgoing RF signals from the one or more antenna elements of the second group.

The wireless power transmitter of claim 9, wherein the one or more antenna elements of the second group include at least two antenna elements and the at least two antenna elements are configured to concentrate transmission of the outgoing RF signals so that each of the outgoing RF signals constructively interferes with at least one other outgoing RF signal of the outgoing RF signals at the location of receiver.

11. The wireless power transmitter of claim 2, wherein a plurality of patch antennas is included in the antenna array.

12. A method of wirelessly delivering power to an electronic device, the method comprising:

at a wireless power transmitter;

processing, by a receiving integrated circuit of the wireless power transmitter, an incoming radio frequency (RF) signal indicating a location of a receiver;

generating, by a transmitting integrated circuit of the wireless power transmitter, outgoing RF power signals based on the processed incoming RF signal, wherein the wireless power transmitter includes an antenna array comprising (i) a first group of antenna elements coupled and dedicated to the receiving integrated circuit, and (ii) a second group of antenna elements switchably coupled to the transmitting integrated circuit;

causing, by a controller coupled to the receiving and transmitting integrated circuits, one or more antenna elements of the second group of antenna elements to be coupled to the transmitting integrated circuit based on the location of the receiver; and

causing, by the controller, the one or more antenna elements of the second group of antenna elements to transmit the outgoing RF power signals to the location of the receiver, wherein the receiver uses energy from the received outgoing RF power signals to power and/or charge an electronic device.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the first group of antenna elements comprises a row or column of antenna elements in the antenna array.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the second group of antenna elements comprises:

one or more rows of antenna elements in the antenna array;

one or more columns of antenna elements in the antenna array;

or

one or more rows and one or more columns of antenna elements in the antenna array.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the first group of antenna elements differs from the second group of antenna elements

16. The method of claim 15, wherein:

the first group of antenna elements includes at least two antenna elements; and

the second group of antenna elements includes at least two antenna elements.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein:

the receiving integrated circuit has first components;

the transmitting integrated circuit has second components; and

the first components differ from the second components.

18. The method of claim 12, further comprising, at the wireless power transmitter:

controlling, by the controller, operation of the transmitting integrated circuit so as to concentrate transmission of the outgoing RF signals from the one or more antenna elements of the second group.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein:

the one or more antenna elements of the second group include at least two antenna elements; and

the method further comprises, at the wireless power transmitter;

concentrating, by the at least two antenna elements of the second group, transmission of the outgoing RF signals so that each of the outgoing RF signals constructively interferes with at least one other outgoing RF signal of the outgoing RF signals at the location of receiver.

20. The method of claim 12, wherein a plurality of patch antennas is included in the antenna array.
