Abstract

A method is disclosed that includes: receiving, via a network digital video recorder, a request to record requested content; receiving, via a network digital video recorder at a first time, the requested content in a first format and the requested content in a second format; storing, via the network digital video recorder, the requested content in the first format; storing, via the network digital video recorder, the requested content in the second format; deleting, from network digital video recorder, the requested content in the second format after a predetermined time period; and transcoding, via an on demand transcoder, the requested content in the first format to the requested content in a third format after the predetermined time period.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving, via a network digital video recorder, a request to record requested content;

receiving, via a network digital video recorder at a first time, the requested content in a first format and the requested content in a second format;

storing, via the network digital video recorder, the requested content in the first format;

storing, via the network digital video recorder, the requested content in the second format; and

deleting, from network digital video recorder, the requested content in the second format after a predetermined time period.

2. The method of claim 1,

wherein the first format has a first quality,

wherein the second format has a second quality, and

wherein at least one of the resolution and the bit rate of the first quality is higher than a respective at least one of the resolution and the bit rate of the second quality.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the first format comprises a highest quality format.

4. The method of claim 3,

wherein the first format has a first quality,

wherein the second format has a second quality, and

wherein the second thrmat is derived from the first format.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the second format is one of the group consisting of ABR in H.264/AVC, H.264/AVC, SVC and HEVC.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

transcoding, via an on demand transcoder, the requested content in the first format to the requested content in a third format after the predetermined time period,

wherein the third format is based on the second format.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first format comprises a highest quality format.

8. The method of claim 7,

wherein the first format has a first quality,

wherein the second format has a second quality, and

wherein the second format is derived from the first format.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the second format is one of the roup consisting of ABR in H.264/AVC, H.264/AVC, SVC and HEVC.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

transcoding, via an on demand transcoder, the requested content in the first format to the requested content in a third format after the predetermined time period,

wherein the third format is based on the second format.

11. The method of claim 1,

wherein the first format has a first quality,

wherein the second format has a second quality, and

wherein the second format is derived from the first format.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the second formatis one of the group consisting of ABR in H.264/AVC, H.264/AVC, SVC and HEVC.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

transcoding, via an on demand transcoder, the requested content in the first format to the requested content in a third format after the predetermined time period,

wherein the third format is based on the second format.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the second format is one of the group consisting of ABR in H.264/AVC, H.264/AVC, SVC and HEVC.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

transcoding, via an on demand transcoder, the requested content in the first format to the requested content in a third format after the predetermined time period,

wherein the third format is based on the second format.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transcoding, via, an on demand transcoder, the requested content in the first format to the requested content in a third format after the predetermined time period,

wherein the third format is based on the second format.

17. The method of claim 16,

wherein the first format has a first quality,

wherein the second format has a second quality,

wherein the third format has a third quality,

wherein at least one of the resolution and the bit rate of the first quality is higher than a respective at least one of the resolution and the bit rate of the second quality, and

wherein at least one of the resolution and the bit rate of the second quality is higher than a respective at least one of the resolution and the bit rate of the third quality.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein said transcoding the requested content comprises transcoding into the third format having a bit rate based on network conditions.
