Abstract
A process and system are disclosed for downloading sensor data, stored in a memory device of a surgical cutting and fastening instrument, to an external or remote computer device. The process may involve storing data from one or more sensors of a surgical cutting and fastening instrument in a memory device of a control unit of the surgical cutting and fastening instrument during a surgical procedure involving the surgical cutting and fastening instrument. Next, after the surgical procedure, a data link between the control unit and the remote computer device is established. Then, the sensor data can be downloaded from the control unit to the remote computer device.

2. A surgical cutting and fastening system, comprising:
-
an end effector, comprising; a jaw; an anvil comprising staple forming features, wherein said anvil is selectively movable relative to said jaw between an open position and a closed position, wherein said anvil moves toward said closed position in response to a closure motion; a firing member movable between a starting position and an ending position, wherein said firing member moves toward said ending position in response to a firing motion; and a staple cartridge removably positioned in said jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises staples configured to be deployed from said staple cartridge in response to said firing motion; an elongate shaft, comprising; a longitudinal axis; and an articulation joint, wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said longitudinal axis about said articulation joint; a motor drive system; an enclosure comprising a gear arrangement operably coupled to said motor drive system, wherein said gear arrangement is configured to transmit said closure motion to said anvil and said firing motion to said firing member, and wherein said closure motion and said firing motion are separate and distinct motions; and an actuation console, comprising; a viewing screen; and an input interface controllable by the clinician, wherein said actuation console is in operable communication with said motor drive system, and wherein said motor drive system cannot be operated to perform said firing motion until said closure motion has positioned said anvil in said closed position. - View Dependent Claims (3, 4)

5. A surgical cutting and fastening system, comprising:
-
an end effector, comprising; a jaw; an anvil comprising staple forming features, wherein said anvil is selectively movable relative to said jaw between an open position and a clamped position, wherein said anvil moves toward said clamped position in response to a clamping motion; a firing member movable between an unfired position and a fired position, wherein said firing member moves toward said fired position in response to a firing stroke; and a staple cartridge removably positioned in said jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises staples configured to be deployed from said staple cartridge in response to said firing stroke; a shaft assembly, comprising; a longitudinal axis; and an articulation joint, wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said longitudinal axis about said articulation joint; a motorized system; a housing comprising a gear arrangement operably coupled to said motorized system, wherein said gear arrangement is configured to transmit said clamping motion to said anvil and said firing stroke to said firing member, and wherein said clamping motion and said firing stroke are separate and distinct; and a control system, comprising; a viewing screen; an input interface controllable by the clinician; a processor; and a memory, wherein said control system is in a remote location relative to said motorized system, and wherein said control system is configured such that said firing stroke cannot be initiated until said anvil has been clamped. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7)
