Abstract

A scalable virtual conferencing system which implements a hub and spoke architecture. For example, one embodiment of a scalable virtual conferencing system comprises: a participant management module to logically group each participant in the virtual conferencing system into a hub or one of a plurality of spokes; and a data flow management module to control communication of information between participants in the spokes and participants in the hub, the data flow management module to limit intercommunication from the spokes to the hub in accordance with the manual user input and/or participant management policy; wherein at least one participant in a first spoke is designated as a spoke leader for the first spoke, the spoke leader logically grouped into both the hub and the first spoke, the data flow management module to allow information generated within the first spoke to be propagated into the hub based on input from the spoke leader.

Claims

1. A virtual conferencing system comprising:

a participant management module to logically group each participant in the virtual conferencing system into a hub or one of a plurality of spokes; and

a data flow management module to control communication of information between participants in the spokes and participants in the hub, the data flow management module to limit intercommunication from the spokes to the hub in accordance with the manual user input and/or participant management policy;

wherein at least one participant in a first spoke is designated as a spoke leader for the first spoke, the spoke leader logically grouped into both the hub and the first spoke, the data flow management module to allow information generated within the first spoke to be propagated into the hub based on input from the spoke leader.

2. The virtual conferencing system as in claim 1 wherein the participant management module is to designate one of the participants in the hub as a hub leader, the hub leader to have control over designating a spoke leader in each spoke.

3. The virtual conferencing system as in claim 2 further comprising:

a first virtual conferencing graphical user interface (GUI) to be rendered on clients of participants in the hub, the first virtual conferencing GUI including a first plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the hub and a presentation region including video of the hub leader.

4. The virtual conferencing system as in claim 3 further comprising:

a second virtual conferencing GUI to be rendered on clients of participants in the first spoke, the second virtual conferencing GUI including a second plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the first spoke and a presentation region including video of the hub leader.

5. The virtual conferencing system as in claim 4 wherein the second virtual conferencing GUI further comprises:

the first plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the hub.

6. The virtual conferencing system as in claim 1 a hub leader or spoke leader specifies the participants to be grouped into the hub or specific spokes.

7. The virtual conferencing system as in claim 1 wherein the participant management module implements a policy to automatically select participants to be grouped in the hub or specific spokes, or to select one or more spoke leaders based on one or more variables.

8. The virtual conferencing system as in claim 7 wherein the one or more variables for selecting a spoke leader include one or more of:

grades, contributions made by participants, a level of active participation, or a randomly generated variable.

9. The virtual conferencing system as in claim 3 further comprising:

a streaming agent in the hub configured to stream a representation of the first virtual conferencing GUI to clients in one or more of the spokes.

10. The virtual conferencing system as in claim 9 further comprising:

a second virtual conferencing GUI to be rendered on clients of participants in the first spoke, the second virtual conferencing GUI including a second plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the first spoke and at least one region to display the representation of the first virtual conferencing GUI.

11. A method comprising:

logically grouping each participant in a virtual conferencing system into a hub or one of a plurality of spokes; and

controlling communication of information between participants in the spokes and participants in the hub including limiting intercommunication from the spokes to the hub in accordance with the manual user input and/or participant management policy;

designating at least one participant in a first spoke as a spoke leader for the first spoke, the spoke leader logically grouped into both the hub and the first spoke; and

propagating information generated within the first spoke to the hub based on input from the spoke leader.

12. The method as in claim 11 further comprising:

designating one of the participants in the hub as a hub leader, the hub leader to have control over designating a spoke leader in each spoke.

13. The method as in claim 12 further comprising:

providing a first virtual conferencing graphical user interface (GUI) to be rendered on clients of participants in the hub, the first virtual conferencing GUI including a first plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the hub and a presentation region including video of the hub leader.

14. The method as in claim 13 further comprising:

providing a second virtual conferencing GUI to be rendered on clients of participants in the first spoke, the second virtual conferencing GUI including a second plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the first spoke and a presentation region including video of the hub leader.

15. The method as in claim 14 wherein the second virtual conferencing GUI further includes the first plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the hub.

16. The method as in claim 11 wherein a hub leader or spoke leader specifies participants to be grouped into the hub or specific spokes.

17. The method as in claim 11 wherein the participant management module implements a policy to automatically select participants to be grouped in the hub or specific spokes, or to select one or more spoke leaders based on one or more variables.

18. The method as in claim 17 wherein the one or more variables for selecting a spoke leader include one or more of:

grades, contributions made by participants, a level of active participation, or a randomly generated variable.

19. The method as in claim 13 further comprising:

streaming a representation of the first virtual conferencing GUI to clients in one or more of the spokes.

20. The method as in claim 19 further comprising:

providing a second virtual conferencing GUI to be rendered on clients of participants in the first spoke, the second virtual conferencing GUI including a second plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the first spoke and at least one region to display the representation of the first virtual conferencing GUI.

21. A machine-readable medium having program code stored thereon which, when executed by a machine, causes the machine to perform the operations of:

logically grouping each participant in a virtual conferencing system into a hub or one of a plurality of spokes; and

controlling communication of information between participants in the spokes and participants in the hub including limiting intercommunication from the spokes to the hub In accordance with the manual user input and/or participant management policy;

designating at least one participant in a first spoke as a spoke leader for the first spoke, the spoke leader logically grouped into both the hub and the first spoke; and

propagating information generated within the first spoke to the hub based on input from the spoke leader.

22. The machine-readable medium as in claim 21 further comprising program code to perform the operation of:

designating one of the participants in the hub as a hub leader, the hub leader to have control over designating a spoke leader in each spoke.

23. The machine-readable medium as in claim 22 further comprising program code to perform the operation of:

providing a first virtual conferencing graphical user interface (GUI) to be rendered on clients of participants in the hub, the first virtual conferencing GUI including a first plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the hub and a presentation region including video of the hub leader.

24. The machine-readable medium as in claim 23 further comprising program code to perform the operation of:

providing a second virtual conferencing GUI to be rendered on clients of participants in the first spoke, the second virtual conferencing GUI including a second plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the first spoke and a presentation region including video of the hub leader.

25. The machine-readable medium as in claim 24 wherein the second virtual conferencing GUI further includes the first plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the hub.

26. The machine-readable medium as in claim 21 wherein a hub leader or spoke leader specifies participants to be grouped into the hub or specific spokes.

27. The machine-readable medium as in claim 21 wherein the participant management module implements a policy to automatically select participants to be grouped in the hub or specific spokes, or to select one or more spoke leaders based on one or more variables.

28. The machine-readable medium as in claim 27 wherein the one or more variables for selecting a spoke leader include one or more of:

29. The machine-readable medium as in claim 23 further comprising program code to perform the operation of:

30. The machine-readable medium as in claim 29 further comprising program code to perform the operation of:

providing a second virtual conferencing GUI to be rendered on clients of participants in the first spoke, the second virtual conferencing GUI including a second plurality of thumbnails comprising video images of other participants in the first spoke and at least one region to display the representation of the first virtual conferencing GUI.
