Abstract

A system and method transforming AC voltage to a high-frequency AC voltage and providing the high-frequency AC voltage to an AC LED circuit or rectifying the high-frequency circuit to a DC voltage and providing the DC voltage to a DC LED circuit.

Claims

1. A lighting system powered by an AC voltage source, the lighting system comprising:

a high-frequency AC driver configured to receive at least two different AC forward voltages and having an AC voltage input and an AC voltage output, the AC voltage input being one of the at least two different AC forward voltages, the AC voltage output being a relatively constant frequency, wherein the relatively constant frequency is substantially higher than a frequency of an input voltage;

a bridge rectifier connected to an output of the high-frequency AC driver that provides a rectified AC voltage output;

a semiconductor device connected to the bridge rectifier that regulates voltage and current of the rectified AC voltage output;

at least two LED circuits each of which has at least two LEDs connected in series, electrically connected to an output of the semiconductor device; and

the at least two LED circuits connected to the AC voltage output of the high-frequency AC driver in either a series relationship or a parallel relationship.

2. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the lighting system further includes an antenna and receiver for receiving data wirelessly.

3. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the semiconductor device is a transistor.

4. The lighting system of claim 1 wherein each of the at least two LED circuits has substantially similar forward operating voltages.

5. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the at least two LED circuits are configurable into a series or parallel configuration based on the input voltage to the high-frequency AC driver.

6. The lighting system of claim 5 wherein the at least two LED circuits are configured with a switch.

7. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein a forward voltage drop of the at least two LED circuits closely matches the input voltage of the high-frequency AC driver when the at least two LED circuits are configured in either a series or parallel relationship.

8. A method of providing light, the method comprising:

receiving an AC voltage input at a first frequency at a driver, the driver being configured to receive at least two different AC forward voltages with the AC voltage input being one of the at least two different AC forward voltages;

transforming the AC voltage input at the first frequency to a voltage output using the driver, wherein a voltage of the voltage output is relatively constant when the driver is connected to at least two LED circuits and remains relatively constant regardless of whether an LED circuit is added to or subtracted from an output of the driver; and

supplying the voltage output to the at least two LED circuits.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the voltage output from the driver is a high frequency voltage output.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein the at least two LED circuits are connected to the output of the driver in parallel.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein the driver comprises a high frequency inverter.

12. The method of claim 8, wherein the driver is configured to receive data from a transmission line or an antenna.

13. A method of providing light, the method comprising:

receiving an AC voltage input at a first frequency at a driver, wherein the driver is configured to receive at least two different AC forward voltages with the AC voltage input being one of the at least two different AC forward voltages;

supplying a voltage output from an output of the driver to the at least two LED circuits;

receiving data at the driver using an antenna; and

after receiving the data, controlling at least two LED circuits in response to the data.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the voltage output from the driver is a high frequency voltage output.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the at least two LED circuits are connected to the output of the driver in parallel.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the driver comprises a high frequency inverter.
