Apparatus for direct cooling of continuous rolled rod
First Claim
1. In a rolling mill for rolling cast metal bar into an elongate metal rod, said rolling mill possessing individual roll stands, the improvement comprising:
- rod guiding means at the entrance and at the exit to a roll stand for guiding the rod through a set of rolls mounted in said roll stand, said rod guiding means comprising enclosed guide housing means having sealing means positioned at at least one end thereof, each of said guide housing means having openings at opposite ends thereof to permit passage of the rod therethrough, one of said openings being disposed adjacent said rolls and the other of said openings being disposed outwardly of said rolls, said sealing means being arranged to establish a lesser restriction to liquid flow through said one opening than through said other opening, said sealing means adapted to rollingly contact the surface of the rod for substantially frictionlessly supporting the rod in said housing means, said rod guiding means being affixed to said roll stand, and means for flooding the enclosed interior of said guiding means with liquid whereby said guiding means and rod are cooled and lubricated and the liquid will flow out of said housing through said lesser-restricted one opening onto the respective roll stand for at least partially cooling and lubricating the rolls mounted therein.

Abstract
This disclosure relates to a fluid cooling and lubricating system for metal rod being rolled down from a continuously cast bar and includes a multiple pressure arrangement wherein high pressure fluid is utilized to cool and descale the rod as well as the hot-forming rolls by spraying and wherein low pressure fluid is additionally utilized for cooling and lubrication by flooding roll stand entrance and exit rod-guide housings. Direct and controlled spray cooling of the hot-formed rod is obtained by wide-angled nozzles having solenoid-operated valves responsive to the exit temperature of the rod which is monitored by a photopyrometer whereby the volume of coolant is controlled to obtain a uniform finishing temperature of the rod.

2. The improvement of claim 1 wherein the sealing means are positioned at both the entrance and the exit of said housing means.
-
3. The improvement of claim 1 in which said sealing means comprises idler roller guides that rollingly engage said rod.
-
4. In a rolling mill for rolling cast metal bar into rod, said rolling mill having individual roll stands therein, the improvement comprising:
- a soluble oil solution system comprising a first spray means directed at a point located between a set of rolls mounted in said roll stand and a guide on said roll stand, and second spray means directed towards at least one of said rolls, said first spray means primarily acting to descale said rolls and said rod while said second spray means acts primarily to cool and lubricate at least one of said rolls, and third spray means comprising a spray which emits from between rod guide means which guide means engagingly contact said rod, said rod guide means being formed in part by an enclosed housing having openings at opposite ends thereof to permit passage of the rod therethrough, one of said openings being disposed adjacent said rolls and the other of said openings being disposed outwardly of said rolls, means for flooding said housing with liquid from a source of cooling liquid, said enclosed housing surrounding said rod, and sealing means disposed in said housing for rollingly engaging and supporTing said rod therein said sealing means being arranged to establish a lesser restriction to liquid flow through said one opening than through said other opening, whereby the liquid flooding said housing will flow out through said lesser-restricted one opening onto said adjacent rolls for at least partially cooling and lubricating said rolls.
-
5. The improvement of claim 4 wherein said first spray means includes means for dispensing a relatively high pressure spray and said second spray means includes means for dispensing a relatively lower pressure spray.
-
6. The invention of claim 4 wherein said guide is an exit guide to said roll stand.
-
7. The improvement of claim 4 wherein said first and second spray means are, respectively, high and low pressure nozzles situated in a single spray block, said nozzles being adjustable as to spray angle and flow rate.
