Abstract

The present invention relates to an interactive communication system, such as an interactive cable television system (10), for providing an interactive information output over a common output channel from a plurality of remotely transmitted different information inputs (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) and, more particularly, relates to an improved method for interactively creating a selection profile for a subscriber and interactively selecting in real time one of a plurality of messages, such as television commercials or game scores, based upon the selection profile whereby multiple users of a one-way television signal distribution network (60) may obtain an individualized or tailored program information content for a television programming sequence. The selection profile may be created in advance of transmission of the television program or commercial or during transmission of a given program and may be varied from the head end. In this manner, highly tailored information may be provided to particular subscribers based on their individual profiles as recognized by the system. In addition, selection profiles comprising subsets of a group of parameters may also be created with the tailored programming based on the subsets as well.

Claims

1. In a method for enabling a plurality of different continuous real time interactive television messages to be substantially simultaneously provided during a given prerecorded television program from a plurality of multichannel television receivers comprising a one-way common television signal distribution network, the improvement comprising the steps of:

(a) transmitting a common television message and a plurality of different multichannel television messages over a plurality of contemporaneous channels, said transmitted different multichannel message comprising a plurality of different separately selectable substantially complete prerecorded television messages simultaneously transmitted in real time over said plurality of contemporaneous television channels to said plurality of multichannel television receivers through said one way distribution network, a single substantially complete television message being interactively selectable from said plurality of prerecorded television messages for providing a given one of said different continuous real time interactive television messages for a given one of said multichannel television receivers;

(b) providing said plurality of prerecorded television messages over said plurality of channels to said given one of said multichannel television receivers through said one-way distribution network from a multichannel storage means; and

(c) interactively selecting in real time one of said selectable prerecorded television messages from said plurality of prerecorded television messages for providing a portion of a television programming sequence program information content, a different interactive selection providing a different portion of a program information content for said television programming sequence, a different receiver being capable of independently selecting a different program information content for said television programming sequence, whereby multiple users of said one-way distribution network may obtain an individualized program information content for said television programming sequence;

said interactively selecting step further comprising the steps of interactively creating a selection profile for a subscriber and interactively selecting in real time one of said selectable prerecorded television messages from said plurality of prerecorded television messages based upon said selection profile, whereby a tailored program content for said television programming sequence for said subscriber is provided, each of said complete television messages in said plurality comprising a segway portion located in each of said channels for providing a visually continuous smooth information transition between said common television message and said television programming sequence, said television programming sequence and said common television message being adjacent in real time in said given television program.

An improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said interactive selection profile creating step further comprises the step of interactively creating said selection profile in advance of transmission of said television program, said real time interactive selection based upon said selection profile being during transmission of said television program.

3. An improved method in accordance with claim 2 wherein said television program comprises a plurality of said television sequences.

An improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said transmitting step further comprises the step of transmitting a plurality of said common television messages during said given television program, said plurality of common television messages comprising different program information contents for providing different common television messages, whereby said television program comprises said television programming sequence and said different common television messages.

An improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said television program is an interactive game show and said television programming sequence comprises different game scores, said interactive selecting step comprising the step of interactivity playing the game to obtain said selection profile, said selectable prerecorded television messages comprising said different game scores, whereby an interactive game may be played and scored in real time with the television program content being varied accordingly.

6. An improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said selection profile creating step comprises the step of varying said selection profile upon which said interactive selection is based, whereby said tailored program content is varied.

In a method for enabling a plurality of different continuous real time interactive television messages to be substantially simultaneously provided during a given prerecorded television program from a plurality of multichannel television receivers comprising a one-way common television signal distribution network, the improvement comprising the steps of:

(a) transmitting a plurality of different multichannel television messages over a plurality of contemporaneous channels, said transmitted different multichannel messages comprising a plurality of different separately selectable substantially complete prerecorded television messages simultaneously transmitted in real time over said plurality of contemporaneous television channels to said plurality of multichannel television receivers through said one way distribution network, a single substantially complete television message being interactively selectable from said plurality of prerecorded television messages for providing a given one of said different continuous real time interactive television messages for a given one of said multichannel television receivers;

(b) providing said plurality of prerecorded television messages over said plurality of channels to said given one of said multichannel television receivers through said one-way distribution network from a multichannel storage means; and

(c) interactively selecting in real time one of said selectable prerecorded television messages from said plurality of prerecorded television messages for providing a portion of a television programming sequence program information content, a different interactive selection providing a different portion of a program information content for said television programming sequence, a different receiver being capable of independently selecting a different program information content for said television programming sequence, whereby multiple users of said one-way distribution network may obtain an individualized program information content for said television programming sequence;

said interactive selecting step further comprising the steps of interactively creating a selection profile for a subscriber and interactively selecting in real time one of said selectable prerecorded television messages from said plurality of prerecorded television messages based upon said selection profile, whereby a tailored program content for said television programming sequence for said subscriber is provided, said selection profile creating step comprising the step of varying said selection profile upon which said interactive selection is based, whereby said tailored program content is varied, said selection profile varying step comprising the steps of creating a selection profile set of parameters having at least one subset of said parameters and interactively selecting one of said messages based on said selection profile subset.

In a method for enabling a plurality of different continuous real time interactive television messages to be substantially simultaneously provided during a given prerecorded television program from a plurality of multichannel television receivers comprising a one-way common television signal distribution network, the improvement comprising the steps of:

(a) transmitting a plurality of different multichannel television messages over a plurality of contemporaneous channels, said transmitted different multichannel messages comprising a plurality of different separately selectable substantially complete prerecorded television messages simultaneously transmitted in real time over said plurality of contemporaneous television channels to said plurality of multichannel television receivers through said one way distribution network, a single substantially complete television message being interactively selectable from said plurality of prerecorded television messages for providing a given one of said real time interactive television messages for a given one of said multichannel television receivers;

(b) providing said plurality of prerecorded television messages over said plurality of channels to said given one of said multichannel television receivers through said one-way distribution network from a multichannel storage means; and

(c) interactively selecting in real time one of said selectable prerecorded television messages from said plurality of prerecorded television messages for providing a portion of a television programming sequence program information content, a different interactive selection providing a different portion of a program information content for said television programming sequence, a different receiver being capable of independently selecting a different program information content for said television programming sequence, whereby multichannel users of said one-way distribution metwork may obtain an individualized program information content for said television programming sequence;

said interactive selecting step further comprising the steps of interactively creating a selection profile for a subscriber and interactively selecting in real time one of said selectable prerecorded television messages from said plurality of prerecorded television messages based upon said selection profile, whereby a tailored program content for said television programming sequence for said subscriber is provided, said selection profile creating step comprising the steps of creating a selection profile set of parameters having at least one subset of said parameters and interactively selecting one of said messages based on said selection profile subset.

An improved method in accordance with claim 8 wherein said interactive selection profile creating step further comprises the step of interactively creating said selection profile in advance of transmission of said television program, said real time interactive selection based upon said selection profile being during transmission of said television program.

10. An improved method in accordance with claim 8 wherein said television programming sequence comprises a plurality of different television commercial messages, at least a plurality of said complete television messages comprising a different television commercial message.

11. An improved method in accordance with claim 10 wherein said interactive selecting step further comprises the step of interactively selecting in real time a tailored program content comprising a tailored television commercial for said subscriber from said plurality of messages.

An improved method in accordance with claim 8 wherein said transmitting step further comprises the step of transmitting a change code signal to the plurality of television receivers over said one way distribution network for making the receivers responsive to a different selection profile, whereby the selection profile upon which said interactive selection is based may be varied from the head end, said different selection profile selectable from said head end comprising said subset.

An improved method in accordance with claim 8 wherein said selection profile creating step further comprises the steps of creating a plurality of different selectable subsets of said parameters and interactively selecting one of said messages based on the selected one of said different subsets.

An improved method in accordance with claim 13 wherein said transmitting step further comprises the step of transmitting a change code signal to the plurality of television receivers over said one way distribution network for making the receivers responsive to a different selection profile, whereby the selection profile upon which said interactive selection is based may be varied from the head end.
