1. A method for automatically controlling the operation of a closure member between an open position and a closed position for respectively opening and closing a passageway defined by first and second spaced boundary members, said method comprising:

  • (a) transmitting acoustic energy from said first boundary member across said passageway toward second spaced boundary member;

    (b) receiving reflected echoes of said transmitted acoustic energy at said first boundary member; and

    (c) preventing said closure member from being moved from said open position toward said closed position when the transit time span of said reflected echoes is indicative of the presence of an obstruction within an obstruction detection zone, as well as in the absence of reflected echoes during a predetermined time period, and enabling said closure member to be moved from said open position toward said closed position when the transit time span of said reflected echoes is indicative of the absence of an obstruction within said obstruction detection zone.
