Abstract

A resonator coil assembly (32) includes a dielectric sleeve (40) on which a first resonator coil portion (42) and a second resonator coil portion (44), each of copper foil, are adhered. The dielectric sleeve is dimensioned to receive a human torso therein and in one embodiment (FIG. 1) is circular in cross section and in another (FIG. 4) is elliptical in cross section. A pair of adjustable tuning capacitances (64, 66) and a pair of adjustable matching capacitances (68, 70) are interconnected between one end of the each coil portion and a metal bore liner (54). An opposite end of the coil portions are capacitively coupled to each other (FIG. 1) or to the bore liner (FIG. 3). A half wave length cable (72) interconnects the junctions between the first and second tuning and matching capacitances. One of these junctions is connected by a cable (74) with a radio frequency generator (30) and a radio receiver (34).

Claims

1. A magnetic resonance imaging apparatus comprising:

a magnetic field means generating a magnetic field longitudinally through an image region;

an electrically conductive liner extending longitudinally and around the image region;

a resonator coil assembly including a first coil portion and a second coil portion, the resonator coil assembly being disposed in the conductive liner;

first and second tuning capacitances electrically connected with the first and second coil portions, respectively;

first and second matching capacitances electrically connected between the first and second tuning capacitances, respectively, and the electrically conductive liner; and

,

a radio frequency lead electrically connected with (1) a first junction between the first matching and tuning capacitances and (2) a second junction between the second matching and tuning capacitances.

2. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the first and second tuning capacitances are electrically connected with one end of the first and second coil portions and further including a capacitive coupling means operatively connected with opposite ends of the first and second coil portions.

The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the resonator coil assembly further includes a dielectric sleeve, the first and second coil portions being mounted on one surface of the sleeve and wherein the capacitive coupling means includes a conductive segment on another surface of the dielectric sleeve partially overlapping each of the first and second coil portions to form capacitive coupling therebetween.

4. The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the capacitive coupling means includes a first capacitance electrically connected between the first coil portion and the liner and a second capacitance connected between the second coil portion and the liner.

The apparatus as set forth in claim 4 wherein the first and second coil portions are symmetric about a longitudinally extending plane disposed therebetween and wherein the first and second tuning capacitance and the first and second matching capacitances are connected with the first and second coil portions along a line which is perpendicular to the first longitudinally extending plane such that a radio frequency pick up coil may be disposed parallel to the first longitudinally extending plane to receive magnetic resonance signals without interference with the first and second coil portions.

6. The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 further including a half wave length cable connected between an interconnection between the first tuning and matching capacitances and an interconnection between the second tuning and matching capacitances.

7. The apparatus as set forth in claim 6 wherein the first and second tuning capacitances are concurrently adjustable.

8. The apparatus as set forth in claim 6 wherein the first and second matching capacitances are concurrently adjustable.

9. The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the first and second coil portions are disposed along a cylindrical sleeve.

10. The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the first and second coil portions are disposed along an elliptical sleeve.

11. A magnetic resonance imaging apparatus comprising:

a magnetic field means generating a magnetic field longitudinally through an image region;

an electrically conductive liner extending longitudinally and around the image region;

a first coil portion disposed within the conductive liner and displaced therefrom;

a first impedance network electrically connected between a first end of the coil portion and the conductive liner;

a first capacitance means for defining electrical capacitance between a second end of the coil portion and the conductive liner;

a radio frequency lead operatively connected between the first impedance network and a receiver means for receiving magnetic resonance signals from the first coil portion; and

,

an image reconstruction means for reconstructing an image representation from the received magnetic resonance signals.

12. The apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein the first impedance network includes a tuning capacitance means for capacitively coupling the radio frequency lead and the first coil portion and a matching capacitance means for capacitively coupling the radio frequency lead and the conductive liner.

13. A magnetic resonance imaging apparatus comprising:

a magnetic field means for generating a magnetic field longitudinally through an image region;

a resonance coil former including a sleeve of dielectric material dimensioned to receive a human patient'"'"'s torso therein, the former extending longitudinally along the magnetic field;

a first electrically conductive resonator coil portion disposed along the former;

a second electrically conductive resonator coil portion disposed along the former;

first and second matching capacitive networks, the first matching capacitive network being electrically connected between the first coil portion and a ground means and the second matching capacitive network being electrically connected between the second coil portion and the ground means; and

,

a radio frequency lead connected with at least the first matching capacitive network such that a capacitive coupling is provided between the radio frequency lead and the first coil portion.

14. The apparatus as set forth in claim 13 wherein the ground means includes a grounded annular collar extending around the former.

15. The apparatus as set forth in claim 13 wherein the former is elliptical in cross section.

16. The apparatus as set forth in claim 13 wherein the first and second coil portions are constructed of metal foil which is adhered to one surface of the former.

17. The apparatus as set forth in claim 13 wherein the former is circular in transverse cross section.

18. The apparatus as set forth in claim 17 wherein the first and second coil portions each define at least one window in the metal foil.

21. The apparatus as set forth in claim 13 wherein the ground means includes a metal sleeve extending longitudinally along the magnetic field and surrounding the dielectric former and the first and second coil portions.

19. A magnetic resonance imaging apparatus comprising:

a magnetic field means for generating a magnetic field longitudinally through an image region;

a resonance coil former including a sleeve of dielectric material dimensioned to receive a human patient'"'"'s torso therein, the former extending longitudinally along the magnetic field;

a first electrically conductive resonator coil portion disposed along the former;

a second electrically conductive resonator coil portion disposed along the former;

a first tuning capacitance electrically connected with the first coil portion;

a first matching capacitance operatively connected between the first tuning capacitance and a ground means;

a second tuning capacitance electrically connected with the second coil portion;

a second matching capacitance operatively connected between the second tuning capacitance and the ground means; and

,

a half wave length cable which is connected at one end with a junction between the first matching and tuning capacitances and at its other end at a junction between the second matching and tuning capacitances.

20. The apparatus as set forth in claim 19 wherein the tuning and matching capacitances are adjustable.

22. A whole body, half wave length balanced transmission line resonator comprising:

a dielectric sleeve having generally a 1;

1 ratio between a length and a major diameter thereof;

a first metal foil portion extending along a surface of the dielectric sleeve;

a second metal foil portion extending along the surface of the dielectric sleeve, the first and second foil portions being mirror images of each other and electrically isolated from each other;

first and second matching capacitance networks for capacitively coupling one end of the first and second foil portions with ground;

a half wave length cable connected between the first and second capacitance networks; and

,

a capacitance coupling means for capacitively coupling a second end of the first and second foil portions.

23. A magnetic resonance apparatus comprising:

a magnetic field means generating a magnetic field longitudinally through an image region;

an electrically conductive liner extending longitudinally and around the image region;

a lumbar supporting former disposed within the conductive liner;

a lumbar coil portion operatively connected with the lumbar supporting former;

an impedance network electrically connected with a first end of the lumbar coil portion, with the liner, and with a transmission lead;

a first capacitance means for defining electrical capacitance between a second end of the lumbar coil portion and the conductive liner.

24. The resonance apparatus as set forth in claim 23 wherein the lumbar supporting former conforms to a patient'"'"'s back.

25. The resonance apparatus as set forth in claim 23 wherein the lumbar coil portion is generally planar.

26. The resonance apparatus as set forth in claim 23 wherein the lumbar coil portion is arcuate in transverse section.

27. The resonance apparatus as set forth in claim 23 wherein the impedance network includes a tuning capacitance connected between the transmission line and the lumbar coil portion and a matching capacitance connected between the transmission line and the liner.

28. The resonance apparatus as set forth in claim 23 wherein the lumbar coil portion includes a sheet of metal foil adhered to the former.

29. A magnetic resonance imaging apparatus comprising:

a magnetic field means for generating a magnetic field longitudinally through an image region;

a tubular, electrically conductive liner extending longitudinally and around the image region

a resonance coil former of dielectric material dimensioned to receive a human patient'"'"'s torso therein, the former extending longitudinally along the magnetic field;

an electrically conductive resonator coil mounted on the former;

first matching capacitive network electrically connected between the resonator coil and the conductive liner.

30. A magnetic resonance imaging apparatus comprising:

a magnetic field means for generating a magnetic field longitudinally through an image region;

a resonance coil former of dielectric material dimensioned to receive a human patient'"'"'s torso therein, the former extending longitudinally along the magnetic field;

a first electrically conductive resonator coil portion disposed along the former;

a second electrically conductive resonator coil portion disposed electrically along the former;

first and second matching capacitive networks, the first matching capacitive network being electrically connected between the first coil portion and a ground means and the second matching capacitive network being electrically connected between the second coil portion and the ground means; and

,

a radio frequency conductor connected between the first and second matching capacitance networks.
