1. In an electrochromic display device which comprises a unit cell having a pair of electrodes spaced from each other, at least one of which is transparent and serves as a display electrode, a means for applying a potential across the cell for reversing the electrode polarity, an electrochromic solution filled in the cell, and an optical diffuser means disposed between the paired electrodes to provide a white background, the improvement wherein said electrochromic solution comprises, in an inert solution, an electrolyte and a diphenylamine compound which is capable of electrochemically reversible color formation and erasure, said diphenylamine compound being represented by the following general formula ##STR3## in which R1 represents a hydrogen atom, unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group, or unsubstituted or substituted aralkyl, and R2, R3, R4 and R5 independently represent a hydrogen atom, unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, unsubstituted or substituted aralkyl group, unsubstituted or substituted aryl group, and cycloalkyl group.
