Abstract

A personal memory card system is arranged for use with a memory card which looks and feels much like an ordinary credit card. No ohmic electrical contact is required between the card and a reader/writer in an associated station for transferring data to and from the card and operating power to the card. The need for conductive contacts in transferring data between the reader/writer and the card is avoided through use of a capacitive interface formed when insulated metallic plates on the card are aligned in close proximity with corresponding plates on the reader/writer. Operating power is transferred to the card through an inductive interface formed when a flexible flat inductor embedded in the card is aligned in close proximity to another inductor in the reader/writer. Data to and from the card and power to the card are reliably transferred even after some time of normal use since there are no exposed metallic surfaces to corrode or to which particles may collect. In addition, the potential of damage to the card from electrostatic discharges is minimized since an insulator is provided between the electrical inputs to the card and any sources from which this discharge might occur. The personal memory card system is also arranged to permit an authorized user to selectively reprogram a memory card with new and different data as desired.

Claims

1. A card reader/writer station for use with a portable data card, the card reader/writer station including memory means for storing data and processor means for processing data and comprising:

input/output means for communicating with at least one portable data card, the input/output means being operably connected to and communicating with the processor means and memory means and including capacitive coupling means for differentially transferring data from the reader/writer station to the data card and from the data card to the reader/writer station;

energy coupling means for transmitting magnetic energy from the reader/writer station to the data card, the magnetic energy providing operating power for the data card at a constant level predetermined by the memory means, the energy coupling means including energy sensing means for sensing the level of magnetic energy being transferred to the data card and energy control means operably responsive to the memory means and the sensing means for providing the constant level of operating power to the data card; and

the capacitive coupling means and the energy coupling means providing in combination a complete communication interface between the reader/writer station and the data card.

2. The reader/writer station as in claim 1 wherein the capacitive coupling means comprises a series connection between the reader/writer station and the portable data card, the series connection being formed by bringing into alignment in close proximity electrodes in the reader/writer station and the data card.

3. The reader/writer station as in claim 2 in which at least one of each two electrodes brought into alignment has a dielectric material affixed thereto so that the dielectric material is juxtapositioned between the electrodes.

4. The reader/writer station as in claim 1 wherein the energy coupling means further includes a multiturn coil of electrically conductive material and a ferrite core positioned to direct the transmission of the magnetic energy into a flat multiturn coil in the portable data card.

The reader/writer station as in claim 1 wherein the input/output means comprises an analog interface circuit for coupling data between the capacitive coupling means and the processor means, the interface circuit including a first and a second amplifier for receiving serial data from the processor means and for differentially coupling this serial data to the capacitive coupling means.

The reader/writer station as in claim 5 wherein the capacitive coupling means comprises a first and a second electrode in the reader/writer station, the first and second amplifiers respectively being connected to the first and second electrodes for transferring the serial data from the processor means to the portable data card.

7. The reader/writer station as in claim 6 wherein the analog interface circuit further comprises a third amplifier for receiving differential data from the capacitive coupling means and for coupling this differential data to the processor means.

The reader/writer station as in claim 7 wherein the capacitive coupling means further comprises a third and a fourth electrode in the reader/writer station, the third amplifier being connected to both the third and fourth electrodes for transferring the differential data from the portable data card to the processor means.

9. The reader/writer station as in claim 8 wherein the analog interface circuit further includes oscillatory generator means connected to the energy coupling means for determining the frequency of the magnetic energy transmitted to the portable data card, the oscillatory generator means providing timing information for data transfer operations involving the portable data card.

10. The reader/writer station as in claim 9 wherein the processor means comprises a microcomputer.

11. The card reader/writer station as in claim 1 wherein the memory means comprises electrically alterable programmable read-only memory, the reader/writer station being reprogrammable by data contained in the data card when the data card is brought in operable contact with the reader/writer station.

12. A card reader station for use with a portable data card, the card reader station including memory means for storing data and processor means for processing data and comprising:

means for communicating with at least one portable data card, the communicating means being operably connected to and communicating with the processor means and memory means and including capacitive coupling means for differentially transferring data from the the data card to the reader station;

energy coupling means for transmitting magnetic energy from the reader station to the data card, the magnetic energy providing operating power for the data card at a constant level predetermined by the memory means, the energy coupling means including energy sensing means for sensing the level of magnetic energy being transferred to the data card and energy control means operably responsive to the memory means and the sensing means for providing the constant level of operating power to the data card; and

the capacitive coupling means and the energy coupling means providing in combination a complete communication interface between the writer station and data card.

13. The card reader station as in claim 12 wherein the capacitive coupling means comprises a series connection between the portable data card and the reader station, the series connection being formed by bringing into alignment in close proximity electrodes of the card and of the reader station.

14. The card reader station as in claim 13 in which at least one of each two electrodes brought into alignment has a dielectric material affixed thereto so that the dielectric material is juxtapositioned between the electrodes.

15. The reader station as in claim 12 wherein the energy coupling means further includes a multiturn coil of electrically conductive material and a ferrite core positioned to direct the transmission of the magnetic energy into a flat multiturn coil in the portable data card.

16. The reader station as in claim 12 wherein the communicating means includes an amplifier for receiving differential data from the capacitive coupling means and for coupling this differential data to the processor means.

17. The reader station as in claim 16 wherein the capacitive coupling means comprises a first and a second electrode in the reader station, the amplifier being connected to both the first and second electrodes for transferring the differential data from the data card to the processor means.

18. The reader station as in claim 17 further including oscillatory generator means connected to the energy coupling means for determining the frequency of the magnetic energy transmitted to the portable data card, the oscillatory generator means providing timing information for data transfer operations involving the portable data card.

19. The reader station as in claim 18 wherein the processor means comprises a microcomputer.
