Abstract

A capacitive pressure sensor suitable for making highly sensitive, low pressure measurements is disclosed. The sensor may be mounted into a 0.5 mm OD catheter suitable for multipoint pressure measurements from within the coronary artery of the heart. The sensor employs a transducer which consists of a rectangular bulk silicon micro-diaphragm several hundred microns on a side by two microns thick, surrounded by a supporting bulk silicon rim about 12 microns thick. Both the diaphragm and the rim are defined by a double diffusion etch-stop technique. The transducer fabrication process features a batch wafer-to-glass electrostatic seal followed by a silicon etch, which eliminates handling of individual small diaphragm structures until die separation and final packaging. An addressable read-out interface circuit may be used with the sensor to provide a high-level output signal, and allows the sensor to be compatible for use on a multisite catheter having only two electrical leads.

Claims

1. A multipoint pressure sensing catheter system, comprising:

a catheter;

a plurality of pressure sensors spaced along the catheter; and

signal conduit means within the catheter for providing a path for signals to be passed between an external monitor and each of the pressure sensors, the signal conduit means including only two electrical conductors which extend between the pressure sensors and are connectable to the external monitor,

the pressure sensors each including pressure transducer means for converting a sensed pressure into an internal signal, switching means for applying the internal signal to the signal conduit means, and means responsive to a command signal from the external monitor for selectively activating the switching means at a distinct interval of time,

whereby the external monitor may receive separately in time the internal signal generated by each of the pressure sensors.

2. A catheter system as in claim 1 wherein:

the pressure transducer means of each of the pressure sensors includes a solid-state capacitive pressure transducer having an integrally formed structure made from single-crystal material and having a diaphragm and a rim extending about a substantial portion of the periphery of the diaphragm.

3. A catheter system as in claim 2, wherein:

the pressure transducer of each pressure sensor is an ultraminiature pressure transducer and the integrally formed structure thereof has at least two overall dimensions orthogonal to one another of less than one millimeter each.

4. A catheter system as in claim 2, each pressure sensor further includes a glass plate electrostatically bonded to at least part of the rim.

5. A catheter system as in claim 2, wherein:

the single-crystal material is a silicon semiconductor material, and

the rim and diaphragm are heavily impregnated with at least a first material alters an etching characteristic of the silicon semiconductor material thereof in comparison to single-crystal silicon semiconductor material which contains substantially less of such first material.

6. A catheter system as in claim 5 wherein:

the first material is an impurity dopant selected from the group of dopants including n-type materials and p-type materials.

7. A catheter system as in claim 6, wherein the first material is boron.

8. A catheter system as in claim 2, wherein each of the pressure transducer means includes circuitry means for selectively producing a first electrical signal which is the internal signal and has at least one electrical characteristic which varies in accordance with the amount of pressure applied to the diaphragm.

A catheter system as in claim 1, wherein each pressure sensor further includes a glass support substrate upon which the pressure transducer means of the pressure sensor is mounted, and each glass support substrate is selectively metallized in certain areas, with at least a plurality of such areas on each glass support substrate forming part of the two electrical conductors of the signal conduit means.

10. A catheter system as in claim 1, wherein in each pressure sensor, the internal signal is an electrical signal and the command signal is a temporary change of the power supply voltage from a first nominal level to a second level distinct from the nominal level.

11. A catheter system as in claim 10, wherein:

the transducer means in each pressure sensor includes a transducer capacitor responsive to pressure changes applied thereto, and

the switching means of each pressure sensor includes means for discharging the transducer capacitor of the pressure sensor when a voltage upon the transducer capacitor reaches a predetermined level.

12. A catheter system including a plurality of pressure sensors, the system comprising:

a catheter;

a plurality of pressure sensors spaced along the catheter; and

means disposed within the catheter for providing a path for signals to be passed between an external monitoring apparatus and each of the pressure sensors,

each of the pressure sensors including an ultraminiature capactive pressure transducer having an integrally formed structure made from single-crystal material and that has a diaphragm and a rim extending about a substantial portion of the periphery of the diaphragm, the structure having at least two overall dimensions orthogonal to one another that are less than one millimeter.

13. A catheter system as in claim 12, wherein:

each capacitive pressure transducer includes a capacitor responsive to changes in pressure detected by the diaphragm of the transducer, and

each pressure sensor includes means for regulating the rate at which current is allowed to alter electrical charge upon such capacitor, and means for discharging its capacitor when the voltage across the capacitor reaches a predetermined level.

14. A catheter system as in claim 13 wherein:

the means for providing a path for signals includes a plurality of electrical conductors, and

each pressure sensor includes first circuitry means for converting a pressure sensed by the capacitive pressure transducer into a first electrical signal, first means responsive to command signals from the external monitoring apparatus for applying the first electrical signal to the plurality of conductors, and second circuity means for converting a sensed temperature condition existing at the pressure sensor to a second electrical signal, and second means responsive to command signals from the external monitoring apparatus for applying the second electrical signal to the plurality of conductors.

15. A catheter system as in claim 14, wherein the second circuitry means of each pressure sensor includes a reference capacitor which is used to sense the temperature condition at the pressure sensor.

16. A catheter system as in claim 12, wherein

each capacitive pressure transducer includes a parallel-plate capacitor with one plate thereof being formed by the diaphragm of the integrally formed structure thereof, with the capacitance of the capacitor being adjustable by pressure applied to one side of the diaphragm.

17. A catheter system as in claim 16, wherein

the single-crystal material of each structure includes silicon semiconductor material which is doped sufficiently so that the material is conductive and thereby enables the diaphragm thereof to act as one plate of the parallel-plate capacitor.

18. A multipoint pressure-sensing catheter system, comprising:

a catheter;

a plurality of pressure-sensing apparatuses spaced along the catheter; and

signal conduit means within the catheter for providing a path for electrical signals to be passed between an external monitor and each of the pressure sensing apparatuses;

the pressure sensing apparatuses each including pressure transducer means for converting a sensed pressure into a first electrical signal, switching means for applying the first electrical signal to the signal conduit means, and addressing means responsive to command signals in the form of temporary changes in power supply voltage from the external monitor for selectively activating the switching means at a distinct interval of time.

the signal conduit means including no more than two electrical conductors which provide electrical power to and extend between the pressure sensing apparatuses and are connectable to the external monitor,

the pressure transducer means in each pressure sensing apparatus including a transducer capacitor responsive to pressure changes applied thereto,

the switching means of each pressure sensing apparatus including means for discharging the transducer capacitor thereof when a voltage upon the such capacitor reaches a predetermined level,

whereby the external monitor can address each pressure sensing apparatus separately in time, and receive separately in time the first electrical signal generated by each pressure sensing apparatus by providing such command signals over the two electrical conductors.

19. A catheter system as in claim 18, wherein the first electrical signal of each transducer means applied to the signal conduit means is a current whose magnitude changes with respect to time.

20. A catheter system as in claim 19, wherein the first electrical signal of each pressure sensing apparatus repetitively varies with respect to time when the switching means thereof has been selectively activated, with the repetition rate of first electrical signal corresponding to the pressure sensed by the pressure transducer means of the pressure sensing apparatus.

21. A catheter system as in claim 20, wherein

each pressure sensing apparatus further includes circuitry means for converting a sensed temperature condition existing at the pressure sensing apparatus to a second electrical signal, and second means responsive to command signals from an external monitor for applying the second electrical signal to the two electrical conductors such that the external monitor can monitor temperature conditions at each pressure sensing apparatus.

22. A catheter system as in claim 21, wherein the circuitry means of each pressure sensing apparatus includes a reference capacitor which is used to sense the temperature condition at the pressure sensing apparatus.
