1. A method of ascertaining the magnitude of forces acting upon a roll in a rolling mill, the roll having a main portion and journals at each end of the main portion, comprising the steps of establishing a plurality of deformation monitoring stations;

  • distributing said stations in at least one of two directions including axially and circumferentially of the roll between the two axial ends of the roll; and

    directly monitoring the extent of deformation of the roll as a result of the application of forces to the roll in the course of the rolling operation at each of said plurality of monitoring stations.
