Abstract

A cigarette provides tobacco flavor by heating tobacco, but not burning tobacco or any other material. A heat source which includes granular magnesium, granular iron, and finely divided cellulose generates heat upon contact thereof with an aqueous solution of potassium chloride. The heat source is in a heat exchange relationship with the tobacco. Heat generated by the heat source heats tobacco in a controlled manner. Flavors volatilize from the tobacco and are drawn from the cigarette and into the mouth of the smoker. Typical heat sources heat the tobacco to a temperature within about 70° C. to about 180° C. for 4 to 8 minutes.

Claims

1. A cigarette which does not burn tobacco comprising:

(a) tobacco; and

(b) a non-combustion heat source for heating the tobacco, and including

(i) at least two metallic agents capable of interacting electrochemically with one another, and

(ii) a normally solid dispersing agent.

2. The cigarette of claim 1, wherein the tobacco has the form of a roll of tobacco cut filler, and the tobacco is circumscribed by a paper wrapper.

3. The cigarette of claim 1, wherein the heat source further includes a phase change material.

4. The cigarette of claim 1 or 3, wherein the dispersing agent has a fibrous form.

5. The cigarette of claim 1 or 3, wherein the heat source further includes an electrolyte in undissociated form.

6. The cigarette of claim 5, wherein the heat source is physically separate from the tobacco.

7. The cigarette of claim 5, wherein the electrolyte is water soluble.

8. The cigarette of claim 5, wherein the electrolyte includes potassium chloride.

9. The cigarette of claim 1 or 3, wherein the heat source is capable of heating at least a portion of the tobacco to a temperature in excess of about 70°

C. within 30 seconds from the time that exothermic electrochemical interaction of the chemical agents is initiated.

10. The cigarette of claim 9, wherein the heat source is physically separate from the tobacco.

11. The cigarette of claim 1 or 3, wherein the heat source is such that the tobacco is not heated to a temperature above about 350°

C. during the life of the heat source.

12. The cigarette of claim 1 or 3, wherein the heat source is such that the tobacco is not heated to a temperature above about 200°

C. during the life of the heat source.

13. The cigarette of claim 1 or 3, wherein one of the metallic agents is magnesium metal.

14. The cigarette of claim 13, wherein the heat source is physically separate from the tobacco.

15. The cigarette of claim 1 or 3, wherein one of the metallic agents is magnesium metal, and the heat source further includes sodium nitrate and/or sodium nitrite.

16. The cigarette of claim 1 or 3, wherein the heat source is physically separate from the tobacco.

17. The cigarette of claim 1 or 3, wherein at least a portion of the tobacco has the form of an extract.

18. A smoking article which does not burn tobacco comprising:

(a) tobacco; and

(b) a non-combustion heat source for heating the tobacco, and including

(i) at least two metallic agents capable of interacting electrochemically with one another, and

(ii) a normally solid dispersing agent.

19. The smoking article of claim 18, wherein the heat source further includes a phase change material.

20. The smoking article of claim 18 or 19, wherein the dispersing agent has a fibrous form.

21. The smoking article of claim 18 or 19, wherein the heat source is capable of heating at least a portion of the tobacco to a temperature in excess of about 70°

C. within 30 seconds from the time that exothermic electrochemical interaction of the chemical agents is initiated.

22. The smoking article of claim 18 or 19, wherein the heat source is such that the tobacco is not heated to a temperature above about 350°

C. during the life of the heat source.

23. The smoking article of claim 18 or 19, wherein the heat source is such that the tobacco is not heated to a temperature above about 180°

C. during the life of the heat source.

24. The smoking article of claim 18 or 19, wherein one of the metallic agents is magnesium metal.

25. The smoking article of claim 24, wherein the heat source is physically separate from the tobacco.

26. The smoking article of claim 18 or 19, wherein the heat source is physically separate from the tobacco.

27. The smoking article of claim 21, wherein the heat source is physically separate from the tobacco.

28. The smoking article of claim 18 or 19, wherein the tobacco has the form of an extract.

29. The smoking article of claim 18 or 19, wherein the heat source further includes an electrolyte in undissociated form.

30. The smoking article of claim 18 or 19, wherein one of the metallic agents is magnesium metal, and the heat source further includes sodium nitrate and/or sodium nitrite.

31. A smoking article which does not burn tobacco comprising:

(a) tobacco; and

(b) a non-combustion heat source for heating the tobacco, and including;

(i) a first metallic agent,

(ii) a second metallic agent capable of interacting electrochemically with the first chemical agent,

the heat source being capable of heating at least a portion of the tobacco to at least about 70°

C. within 30 seconds of initiation and to a maximum temperature of less than about 350°

C.

32. The smoking article of claim 31 having the form of a cigarette.

33. The cigarette of claim 32, wherein tobacco has the form of a roll of tobacco cut filler, and the tobacco is circumscribed by a paper wrapper.

34. The smoking article of claim 31, wherein the heat source further includes a dispersing agent.

35. The smoking article of claim 31 or 34, wherein the heat source further includes a phase change material.

36. The smoking article of claim 35, wherein the heat source includes sodium nitrate and/or sodium nitrite.

37. The smoking article of claim 35, wherein the heat source is physically separate from the tobacco.

38. The smoking article of claim 31, wherein the heat source is capable of generating heat when the metallic agents are contacted with an aqueous liquid and a dissociated electrolyte.

39. The smoking article of claim 38, wherein the heat source includes sodium nitrate and/or sodium nitrite.

40. The smoking article of claim 38, wherein the heat source is physically separate from the tobacco.

41. The smoking article of claim 35, wherein the electrolyte includes potassium chloride.

42. The smoking article of claim 31 or 34, wherein the heat source includes sodium nitrate and/or sodium nitrite.

43. The smoking article of claim 31, wherein the tobacco includes a tobacco extract.

44. The smoking article of claim 31, wherein the tobacco is in cut filler form.

45. The smoking article of claim 31, wherein the first metallic agent is magnesium.

46. The smoking article of claim 31, wherein the second metallic agent is iron.

47. The smoking article of claim 31, 32 or 34, wherein the heat source is physically separate from the tobacco.
