1. An electrochromic device comprising a substrate;

  • a first electrode layer provided on said substrate;

    an electrochromic matrix material layer in contact with said first electrode member; and

    a second electrode layer in contact with said electrochromic matrix material layer, at least one of said first and second electrode members being transparent, said electrochromic matrix material layer consisting essentially of a substantially uniform mixture of;

    (i) a metal salt component selected from the group consisting essentially of halides, acetates, nitrates, sulfates, and phosphates of metals selected from the group consisting essentially of copper, cobalt, nickel, lead, rubidium, molybdenum and tin;

    (ii) an ion conductive material component selected from a group consisting essentially of solid electrolytes and gel electrolytes; and

    (iii) an ion conduction enhancer component selected from the group consisting essentially of lithium salts and sodium salts.
