Abstract

Computer programs for capture and analysis of digitized image data signals comprising frame, scan line and digitizer stripe numbers, and edge-detection or bright-spot data relating to images in a field of interest, which includes the steps of converting the edge-detection data to bright spot, reducing the amount of data processed by eliminating duplicate data, normalizing the data into X and Y coordinates, finding image features of interest, selecting features to be reported, and reporting type, number, pattern or location of the image features in the field. An example is processing of shotgun target images scanned by a video camera (whose signals are digitized) through a slit viewing a rotating illuminated drum on which a target has been placed. Other uses include: astronomical image analysis; satellite photos of sites; gatherings of people, things, animals or crops in fields; and movements of objects through a field of view such as objects on a conveyor belt, traffic, ballistic objects, and the like.

Claims

1. Method of capture and analysis of digitized image data signals from a field of interest comprising the steps of:

a) collecting digitized image data from a means for digitizing image information signals;

said data comprises a first plurality of sets, each set having a frame number, a scan line number and a digitizer strip number, and edge-detection data or bright-spot data;

b) converting edge-detection data to bright-spot data;

c) trimming said numbers and said spot data of said first plurality of sets to produce a second plurality of sets;

d) normalizing said numbers and said spot data of said second plurality of sets into a third plurality of sets comprising X and Y coordinate values;

e) finding image features of interest represented by said normalized data of said third plurality of sets;

f) selecting features to be reported; and

g) reporting information about features selected, said information being selected from type, number, pattern or location in said field of interest.

2. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 1 wherein:

a) said data collecting step includes collecting calibration data; and

which includes the steps of;

b) processing said calibration data to provide a calibration reference; and

c) storing said calibration reference.

3. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 2 wherein:

a) said step of trimming said first plurality of sets includes selection of a portion of the total data by comparison to said calibration reference.

4. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 3 wherein:

a) said trimming selection includes eliminating duplicate sets from said first plurality, including duplicate sets selected from multiple sightings and adjacent digitizer stripe sightings of the same image.

5. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 4 which includes the steps of:

a) storing at least one of said first, second or third plurality of sets in at least one stage of processing.

6. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 5 wherein:

a) said calibration processing, normalizing, finding features and reporting steps are carried out as background process daemons.

7. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 5 wherein:

a) said X and Y coordinate values of said normalizing step are rectangular coordinate values having relation to said field of interest.

8. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 7 wherein:

a) said step of finding image features includes growing image features.

9. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 8 wherein:

a) said step of finding image features includes editing of said features.

10. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 9 wherein:

a) said editing includes identification and display of non-regular features and selection or elimination of at least some of said non-regular features.

11. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 8 wherein:

a) said reporting step includes the step of defining the field and the features information type and format to be reported.

12. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 11 wherein:

a) said field is a shotgun target;

b) said field definition is selected from a customer identification and a target identification; and

c) said report includes target analysis.

13. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 12 wherein:

a) said reporting step includes at least one step selected from centering, scaling, transformation, and conversion to polar coordinates.

14. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 13 wherein:

a) said centering step includes reporting center point deviation, and said transformation includes swap or inversion of X, Y coordinate data.

15. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 11

a) said reporting step includes at least one step selected from centering, scaling, transformation, and conversion to polar coordinates.

16. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 15 wherein:

a) said centering step includes reporting center point deviation, and said transformation includes swap or inversion of X, Y coordinate data.

17. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 14 wherein:

a) said step of reporting includes printing a hard copy of said features selected.

18. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 11 wherein:

a) said step of reporting includes printing a hard copy of said features selected.

19. Image data capture and analysis method as in claim 1 wherein said digitizer is operable in either a bright spot mode or an edge-detection mode;

and which includes the step of;

a) converting edge-detection data into bright-spot data when said digitizer is in said edge-detection mode.
