1. A system for automatically controlling the energization of the high beam headlamps of a vehicle in accordance with the presence or absence of light from the headlamps or taillamps of another vehicle, wherein the headlamps of the vehicle comprise conventional unfiltered incandescent lamps that emit light in the visible and infrared regions of the light spectrum, comprising:

  • sensor means including a light sensor for producing an electrical signal related to the light impinging on said light sensor, said sensor means being responsive to light in the infrared region of the light spectrum and substantially nonresponsive to light in the visible region of the light spectrum,control means responsive to said electrical signal from said sensor means for controlling the energization of the high beam headlamps of the vehicle in accordance with a characteristic of said electrical signal.
