Abstract

A portable apparatus having electronic circuitry for selectively monitoring and recording a user'"'"'s ECG signals, wherein a first conductive electrode is disposed on a first surface of the apparatus casing for contact with an ECG lead position on the user'"'"'s body and second and third electrodes are disposed on at least one other surface of the casing for ease of contact by a thumb and finger, respectively, of the user'"'"'s hand. One of the second and third electrodes provides a ground signal source for the electronic circuitry. A wristband is provided for securing the apparatus to the user'"'"'s wrist and a microprocessor controls the electronic circuitry such that the user'"'"'s ECG signal is monitored/recorded only when the user grasps the second and third electrodes. A separate modem device is attachable to the apparatus for effecting burst mode transmission of data to an external receiver.

Claims

1. A wrist-worn, encased apparatus having electronic circuitry for selectively monitoring, recording and transmitting a user'"'"'s electrocardiographic (ECG) signals, wherein an electrode arrangement is provided for acquiring said ECG signals, said arrangement comprising:

a first conductive electrode disposed on a first surface of the apparatus casing for contact with an ECG lead position on the user'"'"'s body; and

second and third conductive electrodes disposed on at least one other surface of the apparatus casing and positioned for ease of contact by the user'"'"'s hand when the first electrode is placed in contact with an ECG lead position on the user'"'"'s body, wherein one the second and third electrodes provides a ground signal source for the electronic circuitry, and wherein the electronic circuitry is activated only when the user touches the three electrodes.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein a wristband is provided for securing the casing to a wrist of the user and the first conductive electrode is disposed on the back surface of the casing such that it lies in continuous electrical contact with the user'"'"'s wrist.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the electronic circuitry comprises:

a power source;

circuit means coupled to the power source and the electrodes for receiving the user'"'"'s analog ECG signals only when the user grasps the second and third electrodes and for converting such signals into digitized format;

memory for receiving and storing the digitized ECG data; and

a microprocessor for controlling storage of the digitized ECG data into the memory.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the microprocessor further controls activation of the circuit means and activates the circuit means only when the user grasps the second and third electrodes.

The apparatus of claim 3, further comprising an output which is coupled to the memory and adapted for transmission of the digitized ECG data to an external receiver, wherein the microprocessor, upon command of the user, controls the transmission of the digitized data from memory to the external receiver via the output.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, further comprising a first command switch which, when closed by the user, provides a transmit signal to the microprocessor, whereupon the microprocessor initiates and controls transmission of the digitized data from the memory to the output.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the digitized data is transmitted to the output in burst mode, thereby minimizing power consumption.

The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the circuit means includes an operational amplifier, the amplifier inputs being coupled to the two non-ground electrodes and the amplifier output being coupled through a resistive element to a compensating terminal of the amplifier rather than being utilized in a feedback arrangement, whereby a high common mode rejection ratio for the amplifier is achieved.

9. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the memory comprises a first in/first out ring memory.

10. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the memory comprises an SRAM.

11. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the memory comprises a flash-EPROM.

12. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the microprocessor controls storage of a sequence of digitized ECG data into memory during each period of time that the user grasps the second and third electrodes, successive data sequences being stored in successive memory locations.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the power source is a battery and the microprocessor generates pulse signals representative of the remaining battery life and stores a pulse signal into memory in conjunction with each stored data sequence.

14. The apparatus of claim 3, further comprising means for visually indicating the amount of memory which is filled at any given moment.

15. The apparatus of claim 3, further comprising means for visually indicating the time of day.

16. A wrist-worn apparatus for selectively monitoring and recording a user'"'"'s electrocardiographic (ECG) data signals and transmitting such signals to an external receiver, comprising:

a casing having front, back and side surfaces and a wristband which secures the casing to a wrist of the user;

a first conductive electrode disposed on the back surface of the casing such that it lies in continuous electrical contact with the user'"'"'s wrist;

second and third conductive electrodes disposed on any surface of the casing other than the back surface and positioned for ease of contact by the user with the hand opposite the contacted wrist;

a power source;

circuit means coupled to the power source and the electrodes for receiving the user'"'"'s analog ECG signals only when the user grasps the second and third electrodes and for converting such signals into digitized format, the circuit means utilizing one of the second and third electrodes as a ground signal source;

memory for receiving and storing the digitized ECG data;

an output jack coupled to the memory and adapted for electrical connection to an input of the external receiver; and

a microprocessor for controlling storage of the digitized ECG data in the memory and, upon command of the user, transmission of the digitized data from memory to the external receiver via the output jack.

The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the circuit means includes an operational amplifier, the amplifier inputs being coupled to the two non-ground electrodes and the amplifier output being coupled through a resistive element to a compensating terminal of the amplifier rather than being utilized in a feedback arrangement, whereby a high common mode rejection ratio for the amplifier is achieved.

18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the memory comprises a first in/first out ring memory.

19. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the memory comprises an SRAM.

20. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the memory comprises a flash-EPROM.

21. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the microprocessor is activated and controls real time mode storage of the digitized ECG data into memory only when the user grasps the second and third electrodes.

22. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the microprocessor controls storage of a sequence of digitized ECG data into memory during each period of time that the user grasps the second and third electrodes, successive data sequences being stored in successive memory locations, and wherein the power source is a battery and the microprocessor generates and stores a pulse signal representative of the remaining battery life in conjunction with each stored data sequence.

23. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising a first command switch which, when closed by the user, provides a transmit signal to the microprocessor, whereupon the microprocessor initiates and controls transmission of the digitized data from the memory to the output jack.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the digitized data is transmitted to the output jack in burst mode, thereby minimizing power consumption.

25. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising means for visually indicating the amount of memory which is filled at any given moment.

26. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising means for visually indicating the time of day.

27. A wrist-worn apparatus for selectively monitoring and recording a user'"'"'s electrocardiographic (ECG) data signals and transmitting such signals to an external receiver, comprising:

a casing having front, back and side surfaces and a wristband which secures the casing to a wrist of the user;

a first conductive electrode disposed on the back surface of the casing such that it lies in continuous electrical contact with the user'"'"'s wrist;

a second conductive electrode electrically isolated from the first electrode, said second electrode being disposed on a surface of the casing other than the back surface and positioned for ease of contact by the user with the hand opposite the contacted wrist;

a power source;

circuit means coupled to the power source and the electrodes for receiving the user'"'"'s analog ECG signals only when the user touches the second electrode and for converting such signals into digitized format;

memory for receiving and storing the digitized ECG data;

an output coupled to the memory and adapted to transmit the ECG data to the external receiver; and

a microprocessor for controlling storage of the digitized ECG data in the memory and transmission of the ECG data from the memory to the external receiver via the output.

28. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the microprocessor further controls activation of the circuit means and activates the circuit means only when the user touches the second electrode.

29. A wrist-worn apparatus for selectively monitoring and recording a user'"'"'s electrocardiographic (ECG) data signals and transmitting such signals to an external receiver, comprising:

a power source;

first and second conductive electrodes disposed on different exterior surfaces of the apparatus, which electrodes, upon contact by the user, sense the user'"'"'s analog ECG signals;

electronic circuitry coupled to the power source and the electrodes which receives the user'"'"'s analog ECG signals and converts such signals into digitized format;

memory coupled to the electronic circuitry which receives and stores the digitized ECG data; and

an output coupled to the memory and adapted to transmit the ECG data to the external receiver;

wherein the electronic circuitry is activated only when the user touches both of the first and second electrodes.

The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the first electrode is disposed on a back surface of the apparatus such that it lies in continuous electrical contact with the user'"'"'s wrist, and the second electrode is disposed on a surface of the apparatus other than the back surface and is positioned for ease of contact by the user with the hand opposite the contacted wrist.
