1. In a process for the preparation of a carboxylic chloride of the formula ##STR7## in which R denotes C1 -C30 -alkyl, C2 -C30 -alkenyl or C2 -C30 -alkynyl, by reacting a carboxylic acid of the formula ##STR8## in which R has the meanings stated with liquid or gaseous phosgene ##STR9## in the presence of a catalyst adduct of phosgene and N,N-disubstituted formamide of the formula ##STR10## in which R1 and R2 are independently C1 -C3 -alkyl or R1 and R2 together form a C4 - or C5 -alkylene chain which may or may not be interrupted by an oxygen atom or by a nitrogen atom carrying a C1 -C3 -alkyl group or CHO, the product (I) being isolated from the catalyst adduct by phase separation, the improvement which comprises:

  • carrying out the reaction in the presence of said catalyst adduct of phosgene and N,N-disubstituted formamide (IV) in which the amount of phosgene in the adduct is kept between about 20 to 70% molar, based on the formamide.
