Abstract

A base-site (304) combines baseband frequency hopping and fast-synthesizer hopping to produce an economical frequency hopping communication system (300). The base-site (304) combines the fast-synthesizer frequency hopping capability of transmitters (307-309) with baseband frequency hopping to produce a frequency hopping communication system (300) which serves the same number of subscribers served by transmitters (208-213) in a purely baseband hopping communication system (200), but with fewer transmitters (307-309). The implementation of frequency-selective cavities (312-317) having very low loss eliminates the need for wideband hybrid combiners (112-114), which in turn eliminates transmitted-signal power loss experienced in a purely fast-synthesizer frequency hopping communication system (100).

Claims

1. A base-site in a frequency hopping communication system, the base-site comprising:

a plurality of transmitters each transmitting variable frequency signals at an output; and

a set of frequency responsive means, coupled to the output of each transmitter, for selectively frequency-tuning a transmitted signal, each frequency responsive means in the set of frequency responsive means tuned to a predetermined frequency and having an output coupled to a common antenna,

whereby each transmitter transmits a signal at a predetermined frequency such that no common predetermined frequencies are transmitted via the common antenna at the same time.

2. The base-site of claim 1 wherein each frequency responsive means in the set of frequency responsive means is tuned to a different frequency than any other frequency responsive means in the set.

3. The base-site of claim 1 wherein each frequency responsive means having an output coupled to the common antenna is tuned to a different frequency than any other frequency responsive means having an output coupled to the common antenna.

4. The base-site of claim 1 wherein the frequency responsive means further comprises a frequency-selective cavity.

5. A base-site in a frequency hopping time-division multiple access (TDMA) communication system, the base-site comprising:

a plurality of transmitters each transmitting variable frequency signals at an output during a TDMA timeslot; and

a set of frequency responsive means, coupled to the output of each transmitter, for selectively frequency-tuning a transmitted signal, each frequency responsive means in the set of frequency responsive means tuned to a predetermined frequency and having an output coupled to a common antenna,

whereby each transmitter transmits a signal at a predetermined frequency during a TDMA timeslot such that no common predetermined frequencies are transmitted via the common antenna during the same TDMA timeslot.

6. The base-site of claim 5 wherein each frequency responsive means in the set of frequency responsive means is tuned to a different frequency than any other frequency responsive means in the set.

7. The base-site of claim 5 wherein each frequency responsive means having an output coupled to the common antenna is tuned to a different frequency than any other frequency responsive means having an output coupled to the common antenna.

8. The base-site of claim 5 wherein the frequency responsive means further comprises a frequency-selective cavity.

9. A base-site in a frequency hopping time-division multiple access (TDMA) communication system for transmitting a plurality of signals having different frequencies via a common antenna, the common antenna serving a plurality of subscribers in one coverage area of the communication system, the base-site comprising:

a plurality of transmitters for transmitting the plurality of signals to the subscribers during TDMA timeslots;

means for interconnecting the plurality of transmitters;

a set of frequency responsive means, coupled to the output of each of the plurality of transmitters, for selectively frequency-tuning a transmitted signal, each frequency responsive means in the set of frequency responsive means tuned to a predetermined frequency and having an output coupled to a common antenna

means, via the means for interconnecting, for instructing each of the plurality of transmitters to transmit a signal tuned to the predetermined frequency of its corresponding frequency responsive means to a subscribers during a TDMA timeslots.

10. The base-site of claim 9 wherein no two subscribers are required to receive a transmission from any one transmitter during any one synchronized TDMA timeslot.

11. A method of transmission in a frequency hopping communication system, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting, via a transmitter, first and second variable frequency signals at an output; and

selectively frequency-tuning the first and second variable frequency signals.

The method of claim 11 wherein the step of selectively frequency-tuning the first and second variable frequency signals further comprises the step of selectively frequency-tuning the first and second variable frequency signals via first and second fixed-frequency cavities tuned to the first and second variable frequencies respectively.

17. The method of claim 11 wherein the step of selectively frequency-tuning the first and second variable frequency signals further comprises the step of selectively frequency-tuning the first and second variable frequency signals for transmission via a common antenna.

13. A method of transmission in a frequency hopping communication system, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting first and second variable frequency signals via a transmitter; and

selectively frequency-tuning the first and second variable frequency signals for transmission to a subscriber via a common antenna,

whereby the transmitter frequency hops between the first and second variable frequency signals during transmissions to the subscriber via the common antenna.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the communication system is a time-division multiple access (TDMA) communication system.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein the transmitter frequency hops between the first and second variable frequency signals during transmissions to a single subscriber in successive TDMA timeslots.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein the transmitter frequency hops between the first and second variable frequency signals during transmissions to at least two subscribers in successive TDMA timeslots.

18. A base-site in a frequency hopping communication system, the base-site comprising:

a plurality of transmitters each transmitting variable frequency signals at an output; and

a set of frequency responsive means, coupled to the output of each transmitter, for selectively frequency-tuning a transmitted signal.

19. The base-site of claim 18 wherein each frequency responsive means in the set of frequency responsive means is tuned to a predetermined frequency.

20. The base-site of claim 18 wherein each frequency responsive means in the set of frequency responsive means is tuned to a different frequency than any other frequency responsive means in the set.

21. The base-site of claim 18 wherein a frequency responsive means further comprises a frequency-selective cavity.

22. The base-site of claim 18 wherein each frequency responsive means in the set of frequency responsive means has an output coupled to a common antenna.

23. The base-site of claim 22 wherein each transmitter transmits a signal at a predetermined frequency such that no common predetermined frequencies are transmitted via the common antenna at the same time.

24. The base-site of claim 22 wherein each frequency responsive means having an output coupled to the common antenna is tuned to a different frequency than any other frequency responsive means having an output coupled to the common antenna.
