Abstract

A battery detect circuit (32) is connected to the battery with the current input to the battery and extracted from the battery measured with a sense resistor (50) and then converted to charge and discharge pulses with a V/F converter (52). A microcontroller (64) is operable to increment a Nominal Available Charge (NAC) register (180) during a charge operation, and to increment a Discharge Count Register (DCR) (184) during a discharge operation. The NAC register (180) indicates the available charge, which value is output to a display (34). The maximum value to which the NAC value can rise is limited by a value stored in the last measured discharge register (182). This value represents the value stored in the DCR (184) whenever the battery is discharged from an apparent full state to a fully discharged state. This results in a qualified transfer to the LMD register (182) such that no knowledge of the actual battery charge is necessary.

Claims

1. A battery monitor for being associated with a battery and for monitoring the operating parameters of the battery, comprising:

a time base generator for generating a time base;

a temperature sensor for monitoring the temperature of the battery;

a processor for determining from said time base generator and the output of said temperature sensor a temperature history of the battery;

a storage device associated with the battery for storing information corresponding to said temperature history; and

an output device for allowing access to said stored temperature history of the battery.

2. The battery monitor of claim 1 wherein said processor comprises a self-discharge counter operating in response to the time base generated by said time base generator and having the rate thereof dependent on said temperature sensor output, said self-discharge counter having an initial value set at a first time.

3. The battery monitor of claim 2 wherein said storage device is a register.

4. The battery monitor of claim 2 wherein said first time corresponds to an event wherein a charge operation has been terminated.

5. The battery monitor of claim 2 and further comprising a charge sensor for sensing a charging condition of the battery wherein charge is being added to the battery and said initial value is defined when a charging operation is completed.

6. The battery monitor of claim 5 wherein said self-discharge counter further has the operation thereof invalidated when a charging operation is initiated, such that the last value output therefrom is the last valid value indicative of the operation of said self-discharge counter.

The battery monitor of claim 1 and further comprising a battery capacity monitor for determining the charge stored in the battery as available charge and storing in said storage device an available charge value corresponding to the determined available charge, said processor operable to decrease said available charge value stored in said storage device as a function of the temperature history of the battery in accordance with defined self-discharge parameters of the battery, said output device operable to access said stored available charge information from said storage device.

8. The battery monitor of claim 7 wherein said battery capacity monitor comprises:

a discharge sensor for measuring charge depleted from the battery;

said storage device comprising in part an available charge register for storing said available charge value, which value is incremented during a charging operation of the battery and decremented during a discharge operation of the battery, the value stored in said available charge register also decremented as a function of said stored temperature history;

a discharge monitor for monitoring the amount of charge discharged from the battery, as determined by said discharge sensor, such that the amount of charge depleted from the battery from an initial charge state to a full discharge state is determined and utilized to calculate the maximum value to which the value stored in said available charge register can be incremented; and

the value in said available charge register comprising the available capacity of the battery stored in said storage device and accessible by said output device.

9. The battery monitor of claim 1 wherein said temperature history comprises a self-discharge value indicating the amount of charge that has been depleted from the battery as a function of time and temperature.

10. The battery monitor of claim 1 wherein said output device comprises a display for displaying information relating to charge stored in the battery, which information is corrected by said temperature history of the battery.

11. The battery monitor of claim 10 wherein said displayed information is available charge information.

12. A battery-pack for containing a battery, comprising:

a positive lead;

a negative lead;

a storage device for storing an available charge value that corresponds to the amount of charge stored in the battery;

a temperature sensor for sensing the temperature of the battery;

a compensation device for compensating said available charge value stored in said storage device as a function of the sensed temperature of the battery; and

an access device for accessing said stored available charge value.

13. The battery-pack of claim 12 wherein said access device comprises a display for accessing said available charge value stored in said storage device and displaying information corresponding to said stored available charge value.

14. The battery-pack of claim 12 wherein said access device comprises a serial communication device for communicating between said storage device and an external location to allow information corresponding to said stored available charge value to be output through said serial communication device.

15. The battery-pack of claim 12 and further comprising an available charge determination device for determining said available charge value as a function of charge input to one of said positive and negative leads to the battery.

16. The battery-pack of claim 15 wherein said available charge device comprises:

a charge sensor for determining the charge that is input to the one of said positive and negative leads;

a discharge sensor for determining the amount of charge depleted from the battery through the one of said positive or negative leads; and

said storage device comprising in part an available charge register for storing a count value corresponding to the available charge value, which count value is incremented during a charging operation of the battery through the one of said positive and negative leads and decremented during a discharge operation of the battery through the one of said positive and negative leads.

The battery-pack of claim 16 and further comprising a discharge monitor for monitoring the amount of charge discharged from the battery through the one of said positive and negative leads, as determined by said discharge sensor, such that the amount of charge depleted from the battery from an initial charge state to a full discharge state is determined and utilized to calculate the maximum value to which said available charge register can be incremented, this defining a battery capacity, said defined battery capacity stored in said storage device and accessible by said access device.

18. The battery-pack of claim 17 wherein said available charge register is inhibited from being incremented above a value corresponding to said stored battery capacity.

The battery-pack of claim 16 and further comprising a self-discharge counter and an internal time base generator for generating an internal time base, said self-discharge counter running at a predetermined rate controlled by said internal time base and operable to decrement the value stored in said available charge register.

20. The self-discharge counter of claim 19 and further comprising means for changing the rate of said discharge counter as a function of the battery temperature as determined by said temperature sensor to account for temperature variations in the battery as a function of the inherent self-discharge thereof.

21. The battery-pack of claim 12 and further comprising a self-discharge device for compensating the stored available charge value as a function of time.

22. The battery-pack of claim 21 wherein said self-discharge device is temperature compensated in accordance with the value output by said temperature sensor to account for temperature variations in the self-discharge rate of the battery.

23. A method for monitoring the operating parameters of a rechargeable battery in a battery-pack, comprising the steps of:

generating a time base in the battery-pack;

sensing the temperature of the battery in the battery-pack;

processing the time base and sensed temperature of the battery in the battery-pack to generate a temperature history of the battery; and

storing the temperature history in a storage device such that it can be accessed at a later time.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein the step of processing the time base and sensed temperature comprises the steps of:

providing a self-discharge counter;

initializing the self-discharge counter at an initial value at a first time;

running the self-discharge counter at a defined base rate as a function of the time base; and

varying the rate of the self-discharge counter as a function of temperature;

the output of the self-discharge counter corresponding to the temperature history of the battery and operable to be stored in the storage device.

25. The method of claim 24 wherein the first time corresponds to an event wherein a charge operation has been completed.

26. The method of claim 24 and further comprising:

sensing a charging operation of the battery wherein charge is being added to the battery; and

defining the initial value when a charging operation is completed.

The method of claim 26 and further comprising invalidating the operation of the self-discharge counter and the value output thereby when a charging operation is initiated as determined in the step of sensing the charging operation, such that the last value output from the self-discharge counter is the last valid value indicative of the operation of the self-discharge counter.

28. The method of claim 23 and further comprising the steps of:

determining the charge stored in the battery as an available battery capacity;

storing in the storage device an available battery capacity value corresponding to the determined available battery capacity;

the step of processing the time base and sensed temperature operable to decrease the available battery capacity value stored in the storage device as a function of the temperature history of the battery in accordance with predetermined self-discharge parameters of the battery; and

the stored available battery capacity information accessible from the storage device.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein the step of determining the charge stored in the battery as available battery capacity comprises the steps of:

measuring the charge depleted from the battery;

storing an available charge value in a charge register;

incrementing the stored available charge value during a charging operation of the battery and decrementing the stored available charge value during a discharge operation of the battery;

decrementing the stored available charge value as a function of the stored temperature history to account for self-discharging of the battery as a function of temperature and in accordance with predetermined self-discharge parameters of the battery;

monitoring the amount of charge depleted from the battery, as determined by the step of measuring charge depleted from the battery, such that the amount of charge depleted from the battery from an initial charge state to a full discharge state is determined and utilized to calculate the maximum value to which the available charge value can be incremented from the point at which the step of measuring charge depleted from the battery determines that a full discharge state has been reached; and

the available charge value comprising the available capacity of the battery accessible.

30. The method of claim 23 wherein the temperature history comprises a self-discharge value indicating the amount of charge that has been depleted from the battery as a function of time and temperature.

31. The method of claim 23 and further comprising accessing the information stored in the storage device and displaying information relating to charge stored in the battery and correcting the displayed information by the temperature history stored in the storage device.

32. The method of claim 31 wherein the displayed information is available battery capacity information.

42. The method of claim 23 and further comprising the step of compensating the stored available charge value stored in the storage device as a function of time.

43. The method of claim 42 and further comprising temperature compensating the step of compensating the stored available charge in accordance with the value output by the step of sensing temperature to account for temperature variations in the self-discharge rate of the battery.

33. A method for monitoring a battery in a battery-pack having positive and negative leads extending external to the battery and interfaced with the positive and negative terminals of the batteries, respectively, comprising the steps of:

providing a storage device;

storing in the storage device an available charge value that corresponds to the amount of charge stored in the battery;

providing a temperature sensor;

sensing with the temperature sensor the temperature of the battery; and

compensating the available charge value stored in the storage device as a function of the sensed temperature of the battery.

34. The method of claim 33 and further comprising accessing the information stored in the storage device and displaying on a display information corresponding to the stored available charge value that was accessed.

35. The method of claim 33 and further comprising:

providing a serial communication device for communicating with the storage device; and

accessing the stored available charge value in the storage device through the serial communication device.

36. The method of claim 33 and further comprising determining the available charge value as a function of charge input to one of the positive and negative leads of battery-pack.

37. The method of claim 36 wherein the step of determining the available charge value comprised of the steps of:

determining the charge that is input to the one of the positive and negative leads of the battery-pack;

determining the amount of charge depleted from the battery through the one of the positive and negative leads of the battery-pack;

providing an available charge register;

storing a count value corresponding to the available charge value in the available charge register;

incrementing the available charge value stored in the available charge register during a charging operation of the battery through the one of the positive and negative leads; and

decrementing the count value stored in the available charge register during a discharge operation of the battery through the one of the positive and negative leads of the battery-pack.

38. The method of claim 37 and further comprising the steps of:

monitoring the amount of charge discharged from the battery through the one of the positive and negative leads of the battery-pack, as determined by the step of determining the amount of charge depleted from the battery;

determining the amount of charge depleted from the battery from an initial charge state to a full discharge state as a defined battery capacity;

calculating the maximum value to which the count value in the available charge register can be incremented from the point at which the step of determining the amount of charge depleted from the battery determines that a full discharge state has been reached; and

storing the defined battery capacity in the storage device, which defined battery capacity is accessible.

39. The method of claim 38 and further comprising inhibiting incrementing of the count value in the available charge register above a value corresponding to the stored battery capacity.

40. The method of claim 37 and further comprising the steps of:

providing a self-discharge counter;

providing an internal time base;

operating the self-discharge counter at a predetermined base rate that is a function of the internal time base; and

decrementing the count value stored in the available charge register with the output of the self-discharge counter, the self-discharge counter output representing a self-discharge rate of the battery in accordance with predetermined self-discharge parameters of the battery.

41. The method of claim 40 and further comprising changing the rate of the self-discharge counter as a function of the battery temperature, as determined by the step of sensing the temperature with the temperature sensor, to account for temperature variations in the battery as a function of the inherent self-discharge thereof.
