1. A method of pain treatment comprising:

  • implanting a medical device adjacent a spinal cord having a dorsal side, said medical device including an array of electrodes, said electrodes being arranged in at least three columns, two of said columns having at least one electrode and one of said columns having at least two electrodes,positioning said medical device so that at least one of said columns is positioned substantially over the midline of the spinal cord, at least one of said columns is positioned laterally of the midline of the spinal cord on one side thereof and at least one of said columns is positioned laterally of the midline of the spinal cord on the opposite side thereof, andapplying electric signals to at least two of said electrodes to effect pain treatment.
