1. An enzyme-electrode sensor for determining an analyte, which analyte is converted by an enzyme into a species detectable by the sensor, said sensor comprising:

  • an electrode; and

a membrane, superimposed on said electrode in physical contact therewith, said membrane being permeable to liquids and solutes, and wherein said membrane further comprises a first layer containing at least one enzyme, and a second layer, disposed on that side of the first layer which is further from said electrode, which second layer includes an area of porous material of restricted permeability through which the analyte can pass and has a porosity within a range of 0.001 to 0.5 percent and a mean pore diameter that does not exceed 0.01 microns.
