Abstract

The present invention provides medical devices comprised of ionically crosslinked polymer, especially, stents, catheter or cannula components, plugs, and constrictors. The medical devices of the present invention are prepared by treatment of ionically crosslinkable polymer compositions with crosslinking ion compositions to provide ionically crosslinked materials.

An important aspect of the present invention is that these medical devices can be disintegrated in-vivo at a desired time through the exposure of the medical device to a chemical trigger which generally is described as an agent that acts to displace the crosslinking ion in the ionically crosslinked material through binding or simple replacement with a non-crosslinking ion.

Claims

1. A medical device comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of stents, catheters, cannulas, plugs and constrictors, wherein said medical device comprises ionically crosslinked polymer and has sufficient mechanical strength to serve as a stent, catheter, cannula, plug or constrictor.

2. The medical device of claim 1 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of carboxylic, sulfate and amine functionalized polymers.

3. The medical device of claim 1 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one polysaccharide.

4. The medical device of claim 1 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable anionic polymer.

5. The medical device of claim 1 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable cationic polymer.

6. The medical device of claim 4 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, alginic acid, pectinic acid, carboxy methyl cellulose, hyaluronic acid, heparin, carboxymethyl starch, carboxymethyl dextran, heparin sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate, and salts thereof.

7. The medical device of claim 5 wherein said ionically crosslinked cationic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of chitosan, cationic guar, cationic starch and polyethylene amine.

8. The medical device of claim 4 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of alginic acid, pectinic acid, carboxymethyl cellulose, hyaluronic acid, and salts thereof.

9. The medical device of claim 8 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from the group consisting of alginic acid and salts thereof.

10. The medical device of claim 9 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises barium.

11. The medical device of claim 9 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises strontium.

12. The medical device of claim 9 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises copper.

13. The medical device of claim 9 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises lead.

14. The medical device of claim 1 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises one or more cations.

15. The medical device of claim 14 wherein said one or more cations are selected from the group consisting of calcium, magnesium, barium, strontium, boron, beryllium, aluminum, iron, copper, cobalt, lead, and silver ions.

16. The medical device of claim 15 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises barium.

17. The medical device of claim 15 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises strontium.

18. The medical device of claim 15 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises copper.

19. The medical device of claim 15 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises lead.

20. The medical device of claim 14 wherein said one or more cations are selected from the group consisting of calcium, iron, and aluminum ions.

21. The medical device of claim 14 wherein said one or more cations comprises calcium ion.

22. The medical device of claim 1 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises one or more anions.

23. The medical device of claim 13 wherein said one or more anions are selected from the group consisting of phosphate, citrate, borate, succinate, maleate, adipate and oxalate ions.

24. The medical device of claim 13 wherein said one or more anions comprises phosphate ion.

25. A medical device comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of stents, catheters, cannulas, plugs, and constrictors, wherein said medical device comprises ionically crosslinked polymer in combination with an agent that displaces a crosslinking ion, and has sufficient mechanical strength to serve as a stent, catheter, cannula, plug or constrictor.

26. The medical device of claim 25 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer which is made from at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of carboxylic, sulfate and amine functionalized polymers.

27. The medical device of claim 25 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer which is made from at least one polysaccharide.

28. The medical device of claim 25 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer which is made from at least one ionically crosslinked anionic polymer.

29. The medical device of claim 25 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer which is made from at least one ionically crosslinked cationic polymer.

30. The medical device of claim 28 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer which is made from one or more members selected from the group consisting of polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, alginic acid, pectinic acid, carboxy methyl cellulose, hyaluronic acid, heparin, carboxymethyl starch, carboxymethyl dextran, heparin sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate, and salts thereof.

31. The medical device of claim 30 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from the group consisting of alginic acid and salts thereof.

32. The medical device of claim 31 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises barium.

33. The medical device of claim 31 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises strontium.

34. The medical device of claim 31 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises copper.

35. The medical device of claim 31 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises lead.

36. The medical device of claim 29 wherein said ionically crosslinked cationic polymer comprises at least one polymer which is made from one or more members selected from the group consisting of chitosan, cationic guar, cationic starch and polyethylene amine.

37. The medical device of claim 28 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer which is made from one or more members selected from the group consisting of alginic acid, pectinic acid, carboxymethyl cellulose, hyaluronic acid and salts thereof.

38. The medical device of claim 25 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises one or more cations.

39. The medical device of claim 38 wherein said one or more cations are selected from the group consisting of calcium, magnesium, barium, strontium, boron, beryllium, aluminum, iron, copper, cobalt, lead, and silver ions.

40. The medical device of claim 39 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises barium.

41. The medical device of claim 39 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises strontium.

42. The medical device of claim 39 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises copper.

43. The medical device of claim 39 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises lead.

44. The medical device of claim 39 wherein said one or more cations are selected from the group consisting of calcium, iron, and aluminum ions.

45. The medical device of claim 39 wherein said one or more cations is calcium ion.

46. The medical device of claim 25 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises one or more anions.

47. The medical device of claim 46 wherein said one or more anions are selected from the group consisting of phosphate, citrate, borate, succinate, maleate, adipate and oxalate ions.

48. The medical device of claim 46 wherein said one or more anions is phosphate ion.

49. The medical device of claim 46 wherein said agent that displaces a crosslinking ion comprises one or more members selected from the group consisting of ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, ethylene diamine tetraacetate, citrate, organic phosphates, inorganic phosphates, trisodium carboxymethyloxysuccinate, nitrilotriacetic acid, maleic acid, oxalate, polyacrylic acid, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium.

50. The medical device of claim 49 wherein said organic phosphate is cellulose phosphate.

51. The medical device of claim 49 wherein said inorganic phosphate is selected from the group consisting of pentasodium tripolyphosphate, mono and di-basic potassium phosphate, sodium pyrophosphate and phosphoric acid.

52. The medical device of claim 25 wherein said agent that displaces a crosslinking ion comprises one or more members selected from the group consisting of citrates, inorganic phosphates, sodium, potassium and magnesium.

53. The medical device of claim 25 wherein said agent that displaces a crosslinking ion is selected from the group consisting of inorganic phosphates and magnesium.

54. A medical device comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of stents, catheters, cannulas, plugs, and constrictors, wherein said medical device comprises ionically crosslinked polymer hydrogel having a water content of less than 90% and has sufficient mechanical strength to serve as a stent, catheter, cannula, plug or constrictor.

55. The medical device of claim 54 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer hydrogel has a water content of less than 85%.

56. The medical device of claim 54 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer hydrogel has a water content of less than 80%.

57. The medical device of claim 54 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer hydrogel has a water content of less than 70%.

58. The medical device of claim 54 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer hydrogel has a water content of less than 60%.

59. The medical device of claim 54 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of carboxylic, sulfate and amine functionalized polymers.

60. The medical device of claim 54 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one polysaccharide.

61. The medical device of claim 54 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable anionic polymer.

62. The medical device of claim 54 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable cationic polymer.

63. The medical device of claim 61 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, alginic acid, pectinic acid, carboxy methyl cellulose, hyaluronic acid, heparin, carboxymethyl starch, carboxymethyl dextran, heparin sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate, and salts thereof.

64. The medical device of claim 62 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from the group consisting of alginic acid and salts thereof.

65. The medical device of claim 64 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises barium.

66. The medical device of claim 64 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises strontium.

67. The medical device of claim 64 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises copper.

68. The medical device of claim 64 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises lead.

69. The medical device of claim 62 wherein said ionically crosslinked cationic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of chitosan, cationic guar, cationic starch and polyethylene amine.

70. The medical device of claim 61 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of alginic acid, pectinic acid, carboxymethyl cellulose, hyaluronic acid, and salts thereof.

71. The medical device of claim 54 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises one or more cations.

72. The medical device of claim 71 wherein said one or more cations are selected from the group consisting of calcium, magnesium, barium, strontium, boron, beryllium, aluminum, iron, copper, cobalt, lead, and silver ions.

73. The medical device of claim 72 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises barium.

74. The medical device of claim 72 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises strontium.

75. The medical device of claim 72 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises copper.

76. The medical device of claim 72 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises lead.

77. The medical device of claim 71 wherein said one or more cations are selected from the group consisting of calcium, iron, and aluminum ions.

78. The medical device of claim 73 wherein said one or more cations is calcium ion.

79. The medical device of claim 54 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises one or more anions.

80. The medical device of claim 79 wherein said one or more anions are selected from the group consisting of phosphate, citrate, borate, succinate, maleate, adipate and oxalate ions.

81. The medical device of claim 79 wherein said one or more anions is phosphate ion.

82. A medical device comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of stents, catheters, cannulas, plugs, and constrictors, wherein said medical device comprises ionically crosslinked polymer and is sterilizable at temperatures of at least 121°

C., and wherein said medical device has sufficient mechanical strength to serve as a stent, catheter, cannula, plug or constrictor.

83. The medical device of claim 82 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of carboxylic, sulfate and amine functionalized polymers.

84. The medical device of claim 82 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one polysaccharide.

85. The medical device of claim 82 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable anionic polymer.

86. The medical device of claim 82 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable cationic polymer.

87. The medical device of claim 85 wherein said ionically crosslinked artionic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, alginic acid, pectinic acid, carboxy methyl cellulose, hyaluronic acid, heparin, carboxymethyl starch, carboxymethyl dextran, heparin sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate, and salts thereof.

88. The medical device of claim 87 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from the group consisting of alginic acid and salts thereof.

89. The medical device of claim 88 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises barium.

90. The medical device of claim 88 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises strontium.

91. The medical device of claim 88 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises copper.

92. The medical device of claim 88 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises lead.

93. The medical device of claim 86 wherein said ionically crosslinked cationic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of chitosan, cationic guar, cationic starch and polyethylene amine.

94. The medical device of claim 83 wherein said ionically crosslinked anionic polymer comprises at least one polymer made from at least one ionically crosslinkable polymer selected from the group consisting of alginic acid, pectinic acid, carboxymethyl cellulose, hyaluronic acid, and salts thereof.

95. The medical device of claim 82 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises one or more cations.

96. The medical device of claim 95 wherein said one or more cations are selected from the group consisting of calcium, magnesium, barium, strontium, boron, beryllium, aluminum, iron, copper, cobalt, lead, and silver ions.

97. The medical device of claim 96 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises barium.

98. The medical device of claim 96 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises strontium.

99. The medical device of claim 96 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises copper.

100. The medical device of claim 96 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises lead.

101. The medical device of claim 96 wherein said one or more cations are selected from the group consisting of calcium, iron, and aluminum ions.

102. The medical device of claim 96 wherein said one or more cations is calcium ion.

103. The medical device of claim 82 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises one or more anions.

104. The medical device of claim 103 wherein said ionically crosslinked polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking ion which comprises one or more anions selected from the group consisting of phosphate, citrate, borate, succinate, maleate, adipate and oxalate ions.
