Abstract

An apparatus and method for synchronizing a spread spectrum receiver comprises a preamble matched filter and a plurality of symbol code correlators for receiving and correlating to a received spread spectrum signal. The preamble matched filter is preferably non-coherent in nature and outputs a correlation signal including a correlation pulse of variable width. The pulse is converted to a square wave having a duration of a discrete number of chip periods. The correlation pulse is used as a timing reference for the symbol code correlators, which are also non-coherent in nature. A center seeking circuit provides an offset to the timing reference according to the width of the correlation pulse. In a preferred TDMA system, a timing window is used for a subsequent time frame for defining a period of time in which the correlation signal output from the preamble matched filter can yield a valid correlation pulse. In addition to synchronizing the symbol code correlators, the receiver clocks for synchronizing to the TDMA time frame may also be adjusted in response to the correlation pulse.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a preamble correlator;

a plurality of symbol code correlators, each symbol code correlator outputting a correlation signal upon receipt of a symbol code for which the symbol code correlator is configured;

a preamble correlation signal output from said preamble correlator; and

a center seeking circuit connected to said preamble correlation signal, said center seeking circuit outputting a timing reference signal indicative of a center of a preamble correlation pulse occurring in said preamble correlation signal.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a timing control circuit for keeping track of time frames within a time division multiplexed communication system, said timing control circuit using said timing reference signal to establish the starting point of a time frame.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 further comprising a correlation clock signal connected to said symbol code correlators, said correlation clock signal synchronized to said timing reference signal.

The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said preamble correlator receives a spread spectrum signal in each of a plurality of minor time frames, said timing reference signal defining a timing window for a subsequent minor time frame during which said preamble correlation signal is deemed to have a valid output.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said preamble correlation signal comprises a subsequent preamble correlation pulse occurring during said timing window.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said preamble correlator is a non-coherent correlator.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of said symbol code correlators is a serial, non-coherent correlator.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said preamble correlation pulse is measured in a discrete number of chip periods, and having a maximum duration longer than one chip period.

9. A spread spectrum receiver comprising:

a plurality of correlators;

a receiver clock;

a counting circuit connected to said receiver clock, whereby major time frames and minor time frames within a time division multiple access communication system are measured;

a correlation signal output from a first one of said correlators; and

a center seeking circuit connected to a first one of said plurality of correlators, said center seeking circuit controlling a timing window during which said correlation signal is deemed valid.

10. The spread spectrum receiver of claim 9 wherein the start of said timing window is determined by reference to a correlation pulse occurring in said correlation signal.

11. The spread spectrum receiver of claim 10 wherein said start of said timing window is positioned a predetermined amount of time prior to an expected time of receipt of a second correlation pulse occurring in said correlation signal, said expected time of receipt falling within a minor time frame assigned for communication to said spread spectrum receiver.

12. The spread spectrum receiver of claim 11 wherein said correlation pulse and said second correlation pulse each has a duration of between one and four chips.

13. The spread spectrum receiver of claim 9 wherein said counting circuit is connected to said plurality of correlators and controls a correlation time of said plurality of correlators other than said first one of said correlators.

14. The spread spectrum receiver of claim 13 wherein said center seeking circuit sends a timing reference signal to said counting circuit whereby said plurality of correlators is synchronized to an incoming spread spectrum signal.
