1. An apparatus, for detecting a position of an occupant, in an occupant compartment of a vehicle, said apparatus comprising:

  • a variable capacitor mounted at a position relative to a predetermined reference location within said vehicle, said variable capacitor having spaced apart conductive plates and a dielectric effectively located between said conductive plates, the capacitance value of said variable capacitor varying as a function of the value of said dielectric, the conductive plates being adapted so that an occupant is effectively part of the dielectric, the dielectric value varying as a function of the occupant location relative to the spaced apart conductive plates;

    capacitance sensing circuit means for sensing the position of the occupant relative to the reference location by sensing the capacitance value of said variable capacitor and for outputting an electric signal indicative of the sensed capacitance value, said sensed capacitance value being indicative of the occupant'"'"'s position relative to said reference location; and

    control means operatively coupled to said capacitance sensing circuit means for generating an electric control signal in response to the electric signal from said capacitance sensing circuit means;

    wherein said spaced apart conductive plates also serve switch contacts of a horn switch.
