1. A device having a wall defining a chamber for holding living cells for implanting into mammalian host tissue wherein the wall comprises:
- (a) a first zone of a first porous material defining a chamber wherein the first porous material is permeable to the flow of nutrients from the host to the chamber and products from the chamber to the host and impermeable to the host immune cells; and
(b) a second zone of a second porous material proximal to host tissue, the second porous material having a nominal pore size ranging from about 0.6 to about 20 μ
m and comprising frames of elongated strands that are less than 5 μ
m in all but the longest dimension wherein said frames define apertures which interconnect to form three dimensional cavities which permit substantially all inflammatory cells migrating into the cavities to maintain a rounded morphology and wherein the second zone promotes vascularization adjacent but not substantially into the second zone upon implantation into the host.
