Abstract

An infusion apparatus includes a pump powered by a source of battery power and capable of operating in a plurality of infusion modes and operating in a power savings mode. The infusion apparatus further includes sensors which sense various conditions of the pump. A controller is programmed to periodically operate in a power-savings mode of operation and also selectively causes each sensor to be connected to the battery power only when the sensor is to detect a condition, thus further conserving battery power.

Claims

1. An infusion apparatus for infusing liquid into a patient, said infusion apparatus comprising:

a source of battery power;

a pump powered by said source of battery power and adapted to pump liquid through a conduit, said pump being operable in a plurality of infusion modes including a first infusion mode in which said pump continuously pumps liquid through said conduit and a second infusion mode in which said pump intermittently pumps liquid through said conduit;

a motor coupled to drive said pump;

means for allowing a user to select one of said first and second infusion modes and for causing said pump to operate in said infusion mode selected by the user;

an air-to-line sensor for detecting the presence of an air bubble within said conduit;

an input pressure sensor for detecting the liquid pressure within said conduit at a point upstream of said pump;

an output pressure sensor for detecting the liquid pressure within said conduit at a point downstream of said pump;

a cassette sensor for generating a signal in response to the detection of a cassette;

an ambient light sensor for detecting an ambient light level;

a controller, responsive to said sensors, that performs a plurality of processing tasks including operation of the pump and the motor; and

control means for causing said controller to periodically operate in a power-savings mode of operation and for selectively causing a first of said sensors to be connected to said source of battery power only when said first sensor is to be utilized and for selectively causing a second of said sensors to be connected to said source of battery power only when said second sensor is to be utilized.

2. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said control means comprises:

means for causing said first sensor to be connected to said source of battery power;

means for reading said first sensor a period of time after said first sensor is connected to said source of battery power; and

means for causing said first sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said first sensor is read by said reading means.

3. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said control means comprises:

means for causing said first sensor to be connected to said source of battery power;

means for reading said first sensor a period of time after said first sensor is connected to said source of battery power;

means for causing said first sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said first sensor is read by said reading means;

means for causing said second sensor to be connected to said source of battery power;

means for reading said second sensor a period of time after said second sensor is connected to said source of battery power; and

means for causing said second sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said second sensor is read by said reading means.

4. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said control means additionally comprises at least one power switch for selectively interconnecting said first and second sensors to said source of battery power.

5. An infusion apparatus for infusing liquid into a patient, said infusion apparatus comprising:

a source of battery power;

a pump powered by said source of battery power and adapted to pump liquid through a conduit, said pump being operable in a plurality of infusion modes including a first infusion mode and a second infusion mode, said first infusion mode being different than said second infusion mode;

a motor coupled to drive said pump;

means for allowing a user to select one of said first and second infusion modes and for causing said pump to operate in said infusion mode selected by the user;

a first sensor that senses a first condition relating to the pumping of liquid through said conduit by said pump;

a second sensor that senses a second condition relating to the pumping of liquid through said conduit by said pump;

a controller, responsive to said sensors, that performs a plurality of processing tasks including operation of the pump and the motor; and

control means for causing said controller to periodically operate in a power-savings mode of operation and for selectively causing said first sensor to be connected to said source of battery power only when said first condition is to be sensed and for selectively causing said second sensor to be connected to said source of battery power only when said second condition is to be sensed.

6. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein said control means comprises:

means for causing said first sensor to be connected to said source of battery power;

means for reading said first sensor a period of time after said first sensor is connected to said source of battery power; and

means for causing said first sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said first sensor is read by said reading means.

7. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein said control means comprises:

means for causing said first sensor to be connected to said source of battery power;

means for reading said first sensor a period of time after said first sensor is connected to said source of battery power;

means for causing said first sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said first sensor is read by said reading means;

means for causing said second sensor to be connected to said source of battery power;

means for reading said second sensor a period of time after said second sensor is connected to said source of battery power; and

means for causing said second sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said second sensor is read by said reading means.

8. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein said control means additionally comprises at least one power switch for selectively interconnecting said first and second sensors to said source of battery power.

9. An infusion apparatus for infusing liquid into a patient, said infusion apparatus comprising:

a source of battery power;

a pump powered by said source of battery power and adapted to pump liquid through a conduit, said pump being operable in a plurality of infusion modes including a first infusion mode in which said pump continuously pumps liquid through said conduit and a second infusion mode in which said pump intermittently pumps liquid through said conduit;

a motor coupled to drive said pump;

an input selector for allowing a user to select one of said first and second infusion modes and for causing said pump to operate in said infusion mode selected by the user;

an air-to-line sensor for detecting the presence of an air bubble within said conduit;

an input pressure sensor for detecting the liquid pressure within said conduit at a point upstream of said pump;

an output pressure sensor for detecting the liquid pressure within said conduit at a point downstream of said pump;

a cassette sensor for generating a signal in response to the detection of a cassette;

an ambient light sensor for detecting an ambient light level;

a controller, responsive to input from said sensors, that performs a plurality of processing tasks including operation of the pump and the motor; and

a power-savings mode controller for causing said controller to periodically operate in a power-savings mode of operation and for selectively causing a first of said sensors to be connected to said source of battery power only when said first sensor is to be utilized and for selectively causing a second of said sensors to be connected to said source of battery power only when said second sensor is to be utilized.

10. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 9 wherein said power savings mode controller includes:

a monitor for reading said first sensor; and

a switch for causing said first sensor to be connected to said source of battery power and for causing said first sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said first sensor is read by said monitor a period of time after said first sensor is connected to said source of battery power.

11. An infusion apparatus a defined in claim 9 wherein said power-savings mode controller includes:

a first monitor for reading said first sensor;

a first switch for causing said first sensor to be connected to said source of battery power and for causing said first sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said first sensor is read by said first monitor a period of time after said first sensor is connected to said source of battery power;

a second monitor for reading said second sensor; and

a second switch for causing said second sensor to be connected to said source of battery power and for causing said second sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said second sensor is read by said second monitor a period of time after said second sensor is connected to said source of battery power.

12. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 9 wherein said power-savings mode controller additionally comprises at least one power switch for selectively interconnecting said first and second sensors to said source of battery power.

13. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 9 wherein said power-savings mode controller includes a memory for storing a power savings mode routine to periodically operate the controller in a power-savings mode of operation.

An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 13 wherein the controller operates in a normal mode of operation using a first rate of power consumption and wherein said power savings mode routine comprises a program for causing the controller to operate in a first power savings mode of operation using a second rate of power consumption, the second rate of power consumption being lower than the normal rate of power consumption and wherein the controller periodically operates in the first power savings mode at a first frequency.

An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 14 wherein said power savings mode routine further comprises a program for causing the controller to operate in a second power savings mode of operation using a third rate of power consumption, the third rate of power consumption being lower than the normal rate of power consumption and wherein the controller periodically operates in the second power savings mode at a second frequency.

16. An infusion apparatus for infusing liquid into a patient, said infusion apparatus comprising:

a source of battery power;

a pump powered by said source of battery power and adapted to pump liquid through a conduit, said pump being operable in a plurality of infusion modes including a first infusion mode and a second infusion mode, said first infusion mode being different than said second infusion mode;

a motor coupled to drive said pump;

an input selector for allowing a user to select one of said first and second infusion modes and for causing said pump to operate in said infusion mode selected by the user;

a first sensor that senses a first condition relating to the pumping of liquid through said conduit by said pump;

a second sensor that senses a second condition relating to the pumping of liquid through said conduit by said pump;

a controller that performs a plurality of processing tasks including operation of the pump and the motor; and

a power-savings mode controller for causing said controller to periodically operate in a power-savings mode of operation and for selectively causing said first sensor to be connected to said source of battery power only when said first condition is to be sensed and for selectively causing said second sensor to be connected to said source of battery power only when said second condition is to be sensed.

17. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 16 wherein said power-savings mode controller comprises:

a monitor for reading said first sensor; and

a switch for causing said first sensor to be connected to said source of battery power and for causing said first sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said first sensor is read by said monitor a period of time after said first sensor is connected to said source of battery power.

18. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 16 wherein said power-savings mode controller comprises:

a first monitor for reading said first sensor;

a first switch for causing said first sensor to be connected to said source of battery power and for causing said first sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said first sensor is read by said first monitor a period of time after said first sensor is connected to said source of battery power;

a second monitor for reading said second sensor;

a second switch for causing said second sensor to be connected to said source of battery power and for causing said second sensor to be disconnected from said source of battery power after said second sensor is read by said second monitor a period of time after said second sensor is connected to said source of battery power.

19. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 16 wherein said power-savings mode controller additionally comprises at least one power switch for selectively interconnecting said first and second sensors to said source of battery power.

20. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 16 wherein said power-savings mode controller includes a memory for storing a power savings mode routine to periodically operate the controller in a power-savings mode of operation.

21. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 16 wherein the controller operates in a normal mode of operation using a first rate of power consumption and wherein said power savings mode routine comprises a program for causing the controller to operate in a first power savings mode of operation using a second rate of power consumption, the second rate of power consumption being lower than the normal rate of power consumption and wherein the controller periodically operates in the first power savings mode at a first frequency.

22. An infusion apparatus as defined in claim 16 wherein said power savings mode routine further comprises a program for causing the controller to operate in a second power savings mode of operation using a third rate of power consumption, the third rate of power consumption being lower than the normal rate of power consumption and wherein the controller periodically operates in the second power savings mode at a second frequency.
