Abstract

A low profile wire perfusion catheter is disclosed for use in percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. The catheter includes a wire configured to be inserted into a blood vessel. The wire is hollow and defines an axial lumen therein. An inflation balloon is attached directly to the wire and is configured to expand radially outward in response to inflation thereof. Inflow and outflow perfusion ports extend through the wire and communicate with the lumen to allow perfusion of blood across the balloon when the balloon is inflated within a blood vessel. Because the balloon is attached directly to the wire, the catheter has an advantageously low cross-sectional area.

Claims

1. A balloon catheter, comprising:

an axially elongate wire suitable for insertion into a blood vessel, said wire being hollow such that said wire defines a lumen extending axially therethrough, said wire having a proximal end and a distal end;

an inflation balloon directly attached to said wire, said balloon configured to expand radially outward;

at least one influent port extending through the wire on a first side of the balloon, said influent port in fluid communication with said lumen;

at least one effluent port extending through said wire on a second side of said balloon, said effluent port in fluid communication with said lumen.

2. The balloon catheter of claim 1, wherein said inflation balloon is a multi-lobed balloon being comprised of alternating regions of thick and thin material, said thin regions being configured to readily expand radially outward, said thick regions being resistant to radial expansion.

3. The balloon catheter of claim 1, additionally comprising an ostial stent configured to be mounted over said balloon.

4. The balloon catheter of claim 1, wherein said balloon and said wire are coated with heparin.

5. The balloon catheter of claim 3, wherein said stent is coated with heparin.

6. The balloon catheter of claim 1, wherein said at least one influent port is located on the proximal end of said wire.

7. The balloon catheter of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of said axially elongate wire is formed of material having pores, said pores being configured to allow the passage of blood therethrough.

8. A catheter, comprising:

a first axially elongate wire suitable for insertion into a blood vessel, said wire having a lumen extending axially therethrough;

an inflation balloon directly attached to said wire, said balloon having an interior region in fluid communication with said lumen;

at least one influent port extending through the wire on a first side of the balloon, said influent port in fluid communication with said lumen;

at least one effluent port extending through said wire on a second side of said balloon, said effluent port in fluid communication with said lumen;

a movable wire located adjacent said first axially elongate wire, said movable wire being contiguous with said first axially elongate wire and slidingly secured to said first axially elongate wire.

9. The balloon catheter of claim 8, wherein said inflation balloon is a multi-lobed balloon being comprised of alternating regions of thick and thin material, said thin regions being configured to readily expand radially outward, said thick regions being resistant to radial expansion.

10. The balloon catheter of claim 8, additionally comprising an ostial stent configured to be mounted over said inflation balloon.

11. The balloon catheter of claim 8, wherein a series of apertures extend through said balloon for releasing medication from said interior of said balloon.

12. A balloon catheter, comprising:

an axially elongate wire suitable for insertion into a blood vessel, said wire being hollow so as to define a lumen extending axially therethrough;

an inflation balloon directly attached to said wire, said balloon having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end of said inflation balloon integrally forming an elongate catheter shaft contiguous with said wire;

means for perfusing blood through said lumen from said proximal end of said balloon to said distal end of said balloon.

13. The balloon catheter of claim 12, wherein at least a portion of said axially elongate wire is formed of material having pores that are configured to allow the passage of blood therethrough.

14. The balloon catheter of claim 12, additionally comprising a movable wire located adjacent said first axially elongate wire, said movable wire slidingly secured to said first axially elongate wire.

15. The balloon catheter of claim 13, additionally comprising a stent configured to be mounted over said inflation balloon.
