1. A method for operating an external defibrillator comprising:

  • discharging an energy source across electrodes in electrical contact with the exterior of a patient in a truncated exponential biphasic waveform;

    monitoring a patient-dependent electrical parameter during the discharging step; and

    controlling duration of the truncated exponential biphasic waveform based on a value of the electrical parameter to be approximately 20.3 mS or less for all values of the electrical parameter.
