Abstract

The present invention is a signaling and control architecture for establishing a connection between mobile users in a wireless ATM LAN. The ATM LAN includes a plurality of portable base station (PBS) switching nodes coupled together to enable communication between said nodes, wherein the nodes are configurable in an arbitrary topology to form an ad-hoc network. The present invention includes network management techniques for configuration of data tables used for connection control. Mobility management techniques are disclosed to handle mobile sign-ons and idle handoffs, locate mobile users during connection and setup and perform handoffs when a mobile is actively involved in a connection. Connection control procedures are also included for setting up and releasing connections on demand.

Claims

1. A method of tracking and locating mobile users in an ATM network, wherein said network includes a plurality of portable base station (PBS) switching nodes coupled together to form said ATM network to enable communication between said nodes, said method comprising the steps of:

at a local PBS, responsive to receiving a registration message from of a mobile user, recording said registration at said local PBS to establish an association with the mobile user;

generating a broadcast page from a local PBS associated with a calling mobile user to find a local PBS associated with a called mobile user identified in a call request received from the calling mobile user;

responding to said broadcast page from another local PBS associated with said called mobile user as a result of said called mobile user having registered with the other local PBS.

2. The method of claim 1, further including the step of establishing a connection between said calling mobile user and said called mobile user.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said step of establishing a connection between said calling mobile user and said called mobile user further includes the steps of:

assigning a virtual path identifier (VPI) and virtual channel identifier (VCI) from said local PBS associated with said calling mobile user for a backward connection from said called mobile user to said calling mobile user;

returning from said local PBS associated with said called mobile user a VPI and VCI for a forward connection from said calling mobile to said called mobile.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein one or more predetermined virtual path identifiers (VPIs) are assigned as broadcast VPIs from each of said PBS.

5. The method of claim 4, further including the step of generating a second table in each of said PBSs for mapping of an incoming VPI on any port to an outgoing port.

6. The method of claim 5, further including mapping of VCIs from said second table.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said local PBS associated with said calling mobile user times-out and rejects the connection request if a called mobile user is not registered with any PBS in said network.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein a VPI includes an identity of the local PBS that assigns the VPI.

9. The method of claim 7, further including the step of checking at each PBS in a connection route between said local PBS associated with said calling mobile and said local PBS associated with said called mobile whether quality of service (QoS) requirements are met.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein QoS messages use inband signaling and are sent in a hop by hop manner.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein bandwidth of each link in said network is divided and preassigned between all PBSs and all routes to a given PBS are stored at said given PBS to thereby enable bandwidth checking at local PBSs during connection set-up of a connection.

12. The method of claim 7, wherein virtual path identifiers (VPIs) assigned by each said local PBS are unique across all VPIs for said local PBS.

13. The method of claim 7, wherein a calling mobile user may communicate directly with a called mobile user using a given VPI when all of said plurality of portable base stations are out of range of at least one of said calling mobile user a nd said called mobile user.

The method of claim 7, further including the step of generating mapping tables at said local PBS of said calling mobile user and said local PBS of said called mobile user, wherein those VPIs used for connection from each said local PBS to each said mobile user are the VPIs associated with each said local PBS, respectively.

The method of claim 1, further including the step of generating a mapping table in each said PBS for mapping of an incoming virtual path identifier (VPI) on any port to an outgoing port, wherein said mapping table ensures a unique path from any source PBS to any destination PBS for an assigned VPI.

16. The method of claim 15, further including the step of generating a third and fourth table within a given PBS, wherein said third table includes a route of PBSs for all VPIs assigned to said given PBS, where a route is specified using a sequence of PBS IDs and port numbers on transit PBSs, and

said fourth table includes a listing of allocated resources for links and PBS nodes in said network.

17. The method of claim 15, further including the step of maintaining at each PBS data associating a VPI with a set of PBSs.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein said nodes in said network communicate with one another via wireless communications.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein said broadcast page is delivered to said network utilizing said local PBS associated with said calling mobile user as a root in a minimum spanning tree for paging said network.

20. An architecture for tracking and locating mobile users in an ATM network, wherein said network includes a plurality of portable base station (PBS) switching nodes coupled together to enable wireless communication between said nodes, said architecture comprising:

means for generating a registration message to a local PBS upon power-up of a mobile user associated with said local PBS,

means for recording said registration message at said local PBS;

means for generating a broadcast page from a local PBS associated with a calling mobile user to find a local PBS associated with a called mobile user;

means for responding to said broadcast page from said local PBS associated with said called mobile user if said called mobile user is registered with a PBS within said network.

21. The architecture of claim 20, further including means for establishing a connection between said calling mobile user and said called mobile user.

22. The architecture of claim 20, wherein said local PBS associated with said calling mobile user times-out and rejects the connection request if a called mobile user is not registered with any PBS in said network.

23. The architecture of claim 20, wherein said means for of establishing a connection between said calling mobile user and said called mobile user further includes:

means for assigning a backward VPI and VCI from said local PBS associated with said calling mobile user for a backward connection from said called mobile user to said calling mobile user; and

means for returning from said local PBS associated with said called mobile user a forward VPI and VCI for a forward connection from said calling mobile to said called mobile.
