Abstract

An apparatus for measuring and visually displaying a user'"'"'s body movement while performing a motion. Sensing means such as, for example, potentiometers are coupled to the joints of a user in order quantitatively detect movement of the user'"'"'s body while performing a motion. The sensors generate signals indicative of the movement of the user'"'"'s body while the user performed the motion. The apparatus also includes processing means for receiving and processing the signals which generated by the sensing means. Display means are coupled to the processing means for receiving the processed signals from the processing means and for graphically displaying at least one image representing the movement of the user'"'"'s body which occurred while the user performed said motion. In so doing, the present invention allows for real time or delayed observation by a user of the user'"'"'s body movements while performing a motion. The apparatus also includes memory means for receiving and storing sample signals corresponding to sample movement of a sample user'"'"'s body when performing the motion. The display means is then able to graphically display concurrently an image representing the movement of the user'"'"'s body and a second image representing the sample movement of a sample body'"'"'s performance of the motion. In so doing, the movement of the user'"'"'s body can be compared with the sample movement of the sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion. In one embodiment, the motion is performed is a golf swing.

Claims

1. An apparatus for measuring and visually displaying a golfer'"'"'s body movement while performing a golf swing comprising:

sensing means coupled to a golfer for quantitatively detecting movement of said golfer'"'"'s body and a golf club while performing a golf swing, and for generating signals indicative of said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body and said golf club while performing said golf swing, said sensing means further comprising;

sensors coupled to said golfer'"'"'s body at joints of said golfer'"'"'s body which are moved while said golfer performs said golf swing, said sensors coupled to said joints of said golfer'"'"'s body such that said sensors quantitatively measure the movement of said joints while said golfer performs said golf swing, said sensors coupled to said golfer'"'"'s joints such that said sensors do not interfere with said movement of said golfer'"'"'s joints while said golfer performs said golf swing,

processing means for receiving and processing said signals generated by said sensing means, said processing means further including;

memory means for receiving and storing sample signals corresponding to sample movement of a sample golfer'"'"'s body when said sample golfer performs said golf swing, and

display means coupled to said processing means for receiving said processed signals and said sample signals from said processing means and graphically displaying at least one image representing said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body and said golf club which occurred while said golfer performed said golf swing.

2. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said sensing means further includes:

flexible interconnection means for coupling adjacent said sensors such that said sensors are interconnected to form a single unit which is coupled to said golfer'"'"'s body.

3. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said sensors are comprised of potentiometers.

4. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said sensors are comprised of magnetic sensors.

5. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said sensors are comprised of optical sensors.

6. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said sensors are comprised of shaft encoders.

7. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said sample movement of said sample golfer'"'"'s body and sample signals correspond to a prior performance of said golf swing by said golfer.

8. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said sample movement of said sample golfer'"'"'s body and said sample signals correspond to a performance of said golf swing by a second golfer.

9. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said sample movement of said sample golfer'"'"'s body and said sample signals correspond to a model performance of said golf swing.

10. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein display means graphically displays said at least one image representing said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body at approximately the same time said golfer performs said golf swing.

11. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said display means graphically displays said at least one image representing said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body after said golfer performs said golf swing.

12. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said display means graphically displays concurrently said at least one image representing said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body and a second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample golfer'"'"'s performance of said golf swing, such that said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body can be compared with said sample movement of said sample golfer'"'"'s performance of said golf swing.

13. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 12 wherein said first at least one image and second at least one image overlap each other.

14. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 12 wherein said second at least one image corresponds to a prior performance of said golf swing by said golfer.

15. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 12 wherein said second at least one image corresponds to a performance of said golf swing by a second golfer.

16. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 12 wherein said second at least one image corresponds to an ideal performance of said golf swing.

17. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 12 wherein said display means further includes:

means for visually indicating the difference between said at least one image representing said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body and said second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample golfer'"'"'s performance of said golf swing.

18. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 12 wherein said display means further includes:

means for audibly indicating when differences occur between said at least one image representing said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body and said second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample golfer'"'"'s performance of said golf swing.

19. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 12 wherein said sensing means further includes:

vibrational means for physically indicating when said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body while performing said golf swing differs from said second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample golfer'"'"'s performance of said golf swing.

20. The golf swing measurement apparatus of claim 12 wherein said sensing means further includes:

electric shock means for physically indicating when said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body while performing said golf swing differs from said second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample golfer'"'"'s performance of said golf swing.

50. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 1 wherein said second at least one image corresponds to a model performance of said motion.

21. An apparatus for measuring and visually displaying a golfer'"'"'s body movement while performing a golf swing comprising:

sensing means coupled to a golfer for quantitatively detecting movement of said golfer'"'"'s body and a golf club while performing a golf swing, and for generating signals indicative of said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body and said golf club while performing said golf swing, said sensing means further comprising;

sensors coupled to said golfer'"'"'s body at joints of said golfer'"'"'s body which are moved while said golfer performs said golf swing, said sensors coupled to said joints of said golfer'"'"'s body such that said sensors quantitatively measure the movement of said joints while said golfer performs said golf swing, said sensors coupled to said golfer'"'"'s joints such that said sensors do not interfere with said movement of said golfer'"'"'s joints while said golfer performs said golf swing,

processing means for receiving and processing said signals generated by said sensing means, said processing means disposed in a compact structure coupled to said body of said golfer, said processing means further including;

memory means for receiving and storing sample signals corresponding to sample movement of a sample golfer'"'"'s body when said sample golfer performs said golf swing, and

biofeedback means coupled to said processing means for receiving said processed signals and said sample signals from said processing means for indicating to said golfer differences between said signals generated by said movement of said golfer'"'"'s body and said sample signals corresponding to said sample movement of said sample golfer'"'"'s body.

22. A head tracking apparatus for translating motion of a user s head into corresponding motion of a cursor on display means:

sensing means coupled to a user for quantitatively detecting movement of said user'"'"'s head, and for generating signals indicative of said movement of said user'"'"'s head,

processing means coupled to said sensing means for receiving and processing said signals generated by said sensing means, and

display means coupled to said processing means for displaying a cursor thereon, said display means able to vary the position of said cursor thereon in accordance with signals received processing means.

23. The head tracking apparatus of claim 22 wherein said processing means further comprises:

calibration means for initially positioning said cursor in a desired location on said display means, and

rate control means for selectively regulating motion of said user'"'"'s head into corresponding movement of said cursor on said display means.

24. The head tracking apparatus of claim 22 further comprising:

mouse button means coupled to said processing means for performing mouse tasks on said display means.

25. An apparatus for measuring a user'"'"'s body movement while performing a body motion comprising:

sensing means coupled to a user for quantitatively detecting movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing a body motion, and for generating signals indicative of said movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing said body motion, said sensing means further comprising;

at least two sensors coupled to said user'"'"'s body, said at least two sensors having a first end of at least two

respective lever arms coupled thereto,

at least two flexible connectors, each of said at least two flexible connectors having a first end thereof coupled to a second location of said user'"'"'s body, said at least two flexible connectors having a second end thereof coupled to a second end of said respective at least two lever arms such that said sensors quantitatively measure the movement of said first and second locations of said user'"'"'s body with respect to each other while said user performs said body motion, said sensors coupled to said first and second locations of said user'"'"'s body such that said sensors do not interfere with said movement of said user'"'"'s body while said user performs said body motion, and

processing means for receiving and processing said signals generated by said sensing means.

26. An apparatus for measuring and visually displaying a user'"'"'s body movement while performing a motion comprising:

sensing means coupled to a user for quantitatively detecting movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing a motion, and for generating signals indicative of said movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing said motion,

wherein said sensing means further comprises sensors attached to said user'"'"'s body at joints of said user'"'"'s body which are moved while said user performs said motion, wherein said sensors are comprised of optical motion sensors, said sensors attached to said joints of said user'"'"'s body such that said sensors quantitatively measure the movement of said joints while said user performs said motion, said sensors attached to said user'"'"'s joints such that said sensors do not interfere with said movement of said user'"'"'s joints while said user performs said motion,

processing means for receiving and processing said signals generated by said sensing means, and

display means coupled to said processing means for receiving said processed signals from said processing means and graphically displaying at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body which occurred while said user performed said motion.

27. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 26 wherein said processing means is disposed in a compact structure coupled to said body of said user.

28. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 26 wherein said processing means further includes:

memory means for receiving and storing sample signals corresponding to sample movement of a sample body when performing said motion.

29. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 28 wherein said sample movement of said sample body and sample signals correspond to a prior performance of said motion by said user.

30. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 28 wherein said sample movement of said sample body and said sample signals correspond to a performance of said motion by a second user.

31. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 28 wherein said sample movement of said sample body and said sample signals correspond to an ideal performance of said motion.

32. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 26 wherein display means graphically displays said at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body at approximately the same time said user performs said motion.

33. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 26 wherein said display means graphically displays said at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body after said user performs said motion.

The motion measurement apparatus of claim 28 wherein said display means graphically displays concurrently said at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body and a second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion, such that said movement of said user'"'"'s body can be compared with said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion.

35. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 34 wherein said display means further includes:

means for visually indicating the difference between said at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body and said second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion.

36. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 34 wherein said display means further includes:

means for audibly indicating when differences occur between said at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body and said second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion.

37. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 34 wherein said sensing means further includes:

vibrational means attached to the user'"'"'s body for physically indicating when said movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing said motion differs from said second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion.

38. An apparatus for measuring and visually displaying a user'"'"'s body movement while performing a motion comprising:

sensing means coupled to a user for quantitatively detecting movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing a motion, and for generating signals indicative of said movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing said motion,

wherein said sensing means further comprises sensors attached to said user'"'"'s body at joints of said user'"'"'s body which are moved while said user performs said motion, wherein said sensors are comprised of shaft encoders, said sensors attached to said joints of said user'"'"'s body such that said sensors quantitatively measure the movement of said joints while said user performs said motion, said sensors attached to said user'"'"'s joints such that said sensors do not interfere with said movement of said user'"'"'s joints while said user performs said motion,

processing means for receiving and processing said signals generated by said sensing means, and

display means coupled to said processing means for receiving said processed signals from said processing means and graphically displaying at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body which occurred while said user performed said motion.

39. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 38 wherein said processing means is disposed in a compact structure coupled to said body of said user.

40. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 38 wherein said processing means further includes:

memory means for receiving and storing sample signals corresponding to sample movement of a sample body when performing said motion.

41. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 40 wherein said sample movement of said sample body and sample signals correspond to a prior performance of said motion by said user.

42. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 40 wherein said sample movement of said sample body and said sample signals correspond to a performance of said motion by a second user.

43. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 40 wherein said sample movement of said sample body and said sample signals correspond to an ideal performance of said motion.

44. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 38 wherein display means graphically displays said at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body at approximately the same time said user performs said motion.

45. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 38 wherein said display means graphically displays said at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body after said user performs said motion.

The motion measurement apparatus of claim 40 wherein said display means graphically displays concurrently said at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body and a second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion, such that said movement of said user'"'"'s body can be compared with said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion.

47. An apparatus for measuring and visually displaying a user'"'"'s body movement while performing a motion comprising:

sensing means coupled to a user for quantitatively detecting movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing a motion, and for generating signals indicative of said movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing said motion,

wherein said sensing means further comprises sensors attached to said user'"'"'s body at joints of said user'"'"'s body which are moved while said user performs said motion, said sensors attached to said joints of said user'"'"'s body such that said sensors quantitatively measure the movement of said joints while said user performs said motion, said sensors attached to said user'"'"'s joints such that said sensors do not interfere with said movement of said user'"'"'s joints while said user performs said motion,

processing means for receiving and processing said signals generated by said sensing means, wherein said processing means further includes memory means for receiving and storing sample signals corresponding to sample movement of a sample body when performing said motion,

display means coupled to said processing means for receiving said processed signals from said processing means and graphically displaying at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body which occurred while said user performed said motion, wherein said display means graphically displays concurrently said at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body and a second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion, such that said movement of said user'"'"'s body can be compared with said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion, and

wherein said first at least one image and said second at least one image overlap each other.

48. The motion measurement apparatus of claim 47 wherein said second at least one image corresponds to a model performance of said motion.

The motion measurement apparatus of claim 47 wherein said sensing means further includes vibrational means attached to the user'"'"'s body for physically indicating when said movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing said motion differs from said second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion.

51. An apparatus for measuring and visually displaying a user'"'"'s body movement while performing a motion comprising:

sensing means coupled to a user for quantitatively detecting movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing a motion, and for generating signals indicative of said movement of said user'"'"'s body while performing said motion,

wherein said sensing means further comprises sensors attached to said user'"'"'s body at joints of said user'"'"'s body which are moved while said user performs said motion, said sensors attached to said joints of said user'"'"'s body such that said sensors quantitatively measure the movement of said joints while said user performs said motion, said sensors attached to said user'"'"'s joints such that said sensors do not interfere with said movement of said user'"'"'s joints while said user performs said motion,

processing means for receiving and processing said signals generated by said sensing means, wherein said processing means further includes memory means for receiving and storing sample signals corresponding to sample movement of a sample body when performing said motion,

display means coupled to said processing means for receiving said processed signals from said processing means and graphically displaying at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body which occurred while said user performed said motion, wherein said display means graphically displays concurrently said at least one image representing said movement of said user'"'"'s body and a second at least one image representing said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion, such that said movement of said user'"'"'s body can be compared with said sample movement of said sample body'"'"'s performance of said motion, and
