1. A method for charging one or more battery cells, comprising the steps of:

  • (a) sensing predetermined battery parameters; and

    (b) charging said one or more battery cells with a continuously and automatically variable charging current from a predetermined minimum to a predetermined maximum level during all operating conditions as a function of said predetermined battery parameters and as a function of a load placed on said one or more battery cells, said charging current controlled by a continuously variable reference signal that varies as a predetermined function of said charging current supplied to said one or more battery cells, the amount of charge in said one or more battery cells and the temperature of said one or more battery cells.
